Quebec-based Medicago begins late-stage study of COVID-19 vaccine

Canadian drug developer Medicago said on Tuesday it had started a late-stage study of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine combined with a booster from GlaxoSmithKline .
The study plans to eventually enroll 30,000 participants and initially focus on healthy adults, followed by adults over the age of 65 and those with co-morbidities.
Medicago, which has Canada s most advanced COVID-19 vaccine project under development, expects to report results from a mid-stage trial of the vaccine in April.
The Medicago vaccine uses a technology known as virus-like particles, which mimics the structure of the coronavirus, but contain no genetic material from it.

Moderna plans to test its COVID-19 vaccine on Canadian children

TORONTO
By most accounts, Canadian kids are not expected to receive a COVID-19 vaccine this year, let alone before the new school year in September.
But a select few may be able to receive an early dose through clinical trials expected to launch in various locales.
Moderna said this week it wants to recruit an unspecified number of Canadian children aged six months to 12 years for upcoming trials of its COVID-19 vaccine, while Johnson & Johnson is poised to run trials for its vaccine with 12- to 17-year-olds.
Pediatrician and professor Dr. Jim Kellner of Alberta Children s Hospital says it s a great opportunity for Canada to play an important role in the COVID-19 effort, and can ultimately speed Health Canada s analysis when it comes time for the regulator to consider approving the vaccine for kids. ....

Under fire, Brazil's Bolsonaro tones down on COVID-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
Gone are the days when COVID-19 was a little flu Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has changed his pandemic-skeptic tune lately, sacking his widely criticized health minister, ordering millions of vaccines and even wearing a mask.
But while a surge in coronavirus deaths in hard-hit Brazil has put the far-right leader on the defensive, analysts doubt he will change his hardline stance on some key issues anytime soon including his vitriolic opposition to stay-at-home measures.
I don t see him making a definitive change. His beliefs are still the same, said political scientist Geraldo Monteiro of Rio de Janeiro State University. ....

Coronavirus: Pandemic isolation depriving toddlers and babies of needed social interaction, microbes

TORONTO
A year into the pandemic and sick of being cooped up in their homes, many Canadians may feel like they’re near the breaking point. But for infants and toddlers, the lack of contact with people outside of their immediate family means they’re missing out on social and biological interactions that are key for their development, say experts.
Marie-Claire Arrieta, an assistant professor in the department of physiology and pharmacology at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, says that the early years up until pre-school age are critical for exposure to microorganisms that help digest our food, protect us from disease and regulate our immune system. ....
