At a historic U.N. general assembly in 2017, 122 countries agreed to adopt a landmark global treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons finally entered into force as of Jan. 22. The treaty is legally binding under international law for the 51 countries that have joined so far. At least 34 more countries are expected to soon ratify it.

THE Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons marks a major step forward for the international disarmament movement. Nuclear weapons are, for the first time, illegal under international law.
