Nicholas Jarecki's sophomore feature, after his financial-morality laden "Arbitrage," is a concoction of three story lines about the escalating opioid epidemic, replete with characters involved at disparate points of despondency and grief.
Set in Montreal and Detroit, the film features undercover DEA operative Jake Kelly (Armie Hammer) who is tasked to link a crew of "Armenian power gangsters" with fentanyl smuggled from Montreal. Meanwhile, the fearless cop must also deal with his junkie sister (Lily-Rose Depp) in rehab.
Then, there's Michigan resident Claire Reimann (Evangeline Lilly), a recovering addict whose world suddenly comes crashing down when her son turns up dead from a drug overdose. Overcome with despair and vengeance, she sets out on a personal mission to hunt down those accountable.

In the 80 years since Tom and Jerry made their cartoon debut, the duo have zonked, bonked and kerplonked one another too many times to count, and somehow the joke has never gotten old. Nor have the aggravated gray cat and his rival the clever brown mouse, who remain forever young, and forever scrappy — a hand-drawn Punch and Judy whose ruthless slapstick antics have withstood critiques from all corners, including parents who think such animated violence could be a bad influence on kids.

Tom and Jerry are elemental. The gray, mishap-prone feline and his resourceful rodent prey have endured for 81 years
on their strengths as the quintessential cartoon cat-and-mouse team: Tom chases Jerry, Jerry outsmarts Tom, the outsmarting inevitably results in some sort of painful, creatively visualized physical comeuppance. That baroque approach to slapstick violence is the other key to the act’s longevity, the inspiration behind at least one similarly deathless parody and the barbaric spark that long ago animated the imaginations of William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, and Chuck Jones. Even in the lesser, less funny shorts where the characters are friends, they still have a tendency to smack one another (or get smacked by others) into comically deformed shapes. It’s a tried-and-true recipe for lizard-brain belly laughs: zero dialogue, no fuss, lots of muss involving sharp or heavy objects found in and outside the home.
