IN AN effort to help UCT salvage and restore valuable material that was housed in the Jagger Library, retailer Pick n Pay has donated 8 000 crates.
The library was damaged during the Table Mountain National Park fires.
According to the retailer, the first 2 000 crates, supplied by CHEP, were delivered by Pick n Pay on Friday morning. The company said it had also sourced an additional 6 000 crates.
CHEP is a company dealing in pallet and container pooling services.
Pick n Pay transformation director Suzanne Ackerman-Berman said: “We were contacted by the UCT executive team who were in urgent need of crates to help store books, documents, maps, and manuscripts from the Jagger Library. Over the weekend, we sent our trucks to collect crates offered by the Paul Cluver Wine Farm in Elgin, as well as from our Longmeadow Distribution Centre in Johannesburg. Delivery of these additional 6 000 crates commenced on Sunday and will be completed on Tuesday.”

Jagger Reading Room: the historical cost of Cape Town's fires

The Daily Vox
On the morning of 18 April 2021, a fire started near Rhodes Memorial, Devil’s Peak in Table Mountain National Park. Driven by strong winds, it reached the University of Cape Town?s (UCT) Rondebosch campus. The building worst affected by the fire was the Jagger Reading Room, which was home to the significant African Studies Collection, which was started in 1953.
The full extent of the loss is not known. The images we’ve seen give us some idea of the devastation. The executive director of the UCT Libraries, Ujala Satgoor has confirmed that the reading room of the Jagger Library is “gutted” but luckily the fire detection system in place triggered the fire shutters which prevented the spread of the fire to other parts of the library.

UCT expressed a sincere message of gratitude to all volunteers who responded to the #JaggerLibrarySalvage call.
Nirode Bramdaw has helped coordinate the volunteers who answered the university's call for people to help move over 2000 crates of precioous and elicate material saved from the devestating fire that destroyed the upper level of the Jagger Reading Room and Special Collections last week.
The call went out on Friday ad on Saturday we had two groups numbering between 50 and 60 each. On Sunday it picked up pace and we went over the 100 mark on both of the two shifts.

Cape Town - As part of the #JaggerLibrarySalvage project, UCT and volunteers across the city, including high school learners, spent the weekend trying to retrieve valuable academic resources from the library’s basement.
Camps Bay High School spokesperson Carol van der Spuy said three of their matric learners, Cathrine Madzatunya, Alev Guven and Rulida Louw, spent the first day of their school holiday volunteering at UCT’s Jagger Library, where they assisted with the salvage efforts in the wake of the devastating fire on April 18.
UCT’s historic Jagger Library was home to the African Studies collection, started in 1953, as well as portions of many other collections: journals, ephemera, manuscripts, film and video, maps and rare antiquarian books.

After ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule and the former Free State provincial executive committee (PEC) were stopped in their tracks while trying to appeal a court decision to disband the PEC, a fresh elective provincial conference is now planned in which the two rival factions in the province will contest for power.
The sight of the decaying Robben Island Museum surely has battle-scarred freedom fighters Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe and Walter Sisulu turning in their graves.
According to a former prisoner, the iconic parts of the museum – including the infamous No 5 cell, where Mandela (prisoner number 46664) served 18 of his 27 years in prison – are “saddening”.

Long road to recovery: UCT appeals for more donations as it rebuilds after fire

CAPE TOWN – Exactly one week since the inferno raged through its premises, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has appealed for more financial aid in the wake of the fire that's caused devastation to several buildings at the campus.
The fire, that began on the slopes of Table Mountain last Sunday, gutted the Jagger Reading Room, two student residences, and other buildings.
Donations in money and kind have poured in, in the wake of the disaster.
The university’s Elijah Moholola has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and added that monetary donations are still welcome as a long road of restoration awaits.

Things that we should find in the ashes: Love Thy Libra...

First published in the Daily Maverick 168 weekly newspaper.
Of all the destruction the Cape Town fire wreaked this past week, the loss of the Jagger Reading Room at the University of Cape Town (UCT) felt so much more painful because it symbolised something deeper than just words, books, films and documents. Within that pile of rocks was the historical DNA of South Africans; the scars of the past accounted for. Often cynical and heartless, social media lit up with broken heart emojis, prayers for the fire crews and first-hand accounts of what it meant to so many lives.
We don’t yet know the true extent of what was lost but it includes: about 70,000 items of the African Studies published print collection, the African Studies film collection (3,500 DVDs), government documents from SA and the African continent, archives awaiting digitisation, the special collections archive office… The list goes on. Many documents have digital lives, but as e-book sales show, it’s just not the same.
