indeed less dangerous to their interests. the continental system, not this continent but the european continent, was beginning to destroy the economies of other european states. napoleon protected france from the economic war by asset stripping all of the conquered territories. first country to rebel would be russia, napoleon s only serious ally, and a major trading nation with a big export trade geared towards supplying the british market. inside the continental system from 1807 to 1811 russia saw their economy collapse. being part of napoleon s team was very bad for your business. in 1811 the czar of russia, alexander, realized that if he carried on like this his country would be bankrupt and he would follow his father to an early grave. the last time russia had made war on brittain the czar was murdered and they changed the government. basically most of the landowners in russia relied on selling goods to the british to pay their bills. so the czar decided that bankru ....

enough to write a vast symphonic work, to inspire a magnificent novel and bring down a great emperor. on this day of battle more russians died than were killed or would die of illness in the whole of the war of 1812 on all sides. this really was a titanic clash of two emporers and two vast armies numbering close on 200,000 men each. the war of 1812 would not be fought by armies of 200,000 men. in fact, it wouldn t be fought by 200,000 men all told. as 1813 began james madison knew that napoleon had lost. his army was in full retreat. indeed, it was in complete collapse. he had taken his country to war on the premise the french would win. they had lost. now what was going to happen? this also took the pressure off brittain and it released naval reinforcements from the british fleet in the baltic which had been keeping it open for trade the previous five years. those ships and key personnel were moved across to the north american station. the british picked out the right ....

eshelman for the national historic trail. now, from day two of the symposium on the british burning of washington, d.c., during the war of 1812. hosted by the white house historical society, the u.s. capitol historical society, and james madison s mount pillier. donald hickey talks about his book of the war of 1812: a forgotten conflict. this is about 45 minutes. donald hickey is a professor of history at wans state college in nebraska. he was called the dean of 1812 scholarship by the new yorker, he s written seven books on the conflict. most notably, the war of 1812, a forgotten conflict, available in a bicentennial edition. his book on andrew jackson and the battle of new orleans is forthcoming from johns hopkins university press. professor hickey is editor of a fine series with monographs on the war of 1812. so it s my pleasure to welcome professor don hickey. and most of them i think were built around either boston or philadelphia. in supporting the war, and particularly the naval war, did jobs ever come into any of the equations in 1812, or looking longer through american history, when did jobs become an issue of national policy? all right. when did jobs start driving our defense policy? yes. not during this war. i don t see any evidence that federalists said, well, we ve got to support expanding the navy because that s going to be jobs in our commercial ports where we re often in a majority. i ve not seen that hint of that. and this is a rare war, in that the we really did bad economically during the war. sometimes we do very well during a war, i think it s more typical that the massive spending in the ploumt, world war ii being the best case probably, generates economic activity. but not in this war. and that s largely as andrew lambert will be happy to remind us, because of the overwhelming power of the british n ....
