Fifty years after New Britain's Strand Theatre closed, developer Avner Krohn is buying the city-owned property as the site for a new 100-unit apartment complex. The $20 million project will be themed in memory of the theater, and will be Krohn's third major multi-story apartment complex with ground-floor retail downtown.
The New Britain Common Council is set to vote tonight to authorize the $125,000 sale of a city-owned lot at 157 Main St., to a subsidiary of Jasko Development for plans to construct a 100-unit apartment building and two-floor restaurant to be known as “The Strand.” The overall $20 million project will be paid via private financing by Jasko Development, which is owned by developer Avner Krohn. Krohn’s Jasko Development and subsidiaries have developed numerous properties in the Hardware City.
One major project within the Silver Lane corridor moved in the right direction at Wednesday’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, while another proposal has been tabled to provide additional details. The commission approved ND Acquisition LLC’s plan to construct two 100,000-square-foot high-tech manufacturing buildings and two large warehouses, combining for more than 2 million square feet on 300 acres just south of Rentschler Field.
