Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler presented the award during a virtual online meeting earlier this month. Montague is the North Carolina Forest Service ranger for Granville and Vance counties. He grew up in the Stovall area of Granville County, attended Kerr-Vance Academy in Vance County and graduated from the School of Forestry at North Carolina State University in 1997. He is married to Heather. They have a 16-year-old son, George. Montague has been a forest ranger for 17 years. A major part of his job is to work with landowners to develop land management plans to help them make the best use of their forest resources. ....
Pro Bono Spotlight By Michael Phillis | February 7, 2021, 8:02 PM EST The ACLU of Ohio, along with attorneys at Thompson Hine LLP and Lambda Legal, recently successfully challenged Ohio s policy forbidding transgender people from correcting their birth certificates to match their gender identity, convincing a judge that the state s policy was discriminatory. Driver s licenses and other documents could reflect an individual s real identity, but around 2016, Ohio started refusing to allow people to correct what plaintiffs called the gender marker on their birth certificate, according to Elizabeth Bonham, an attorney with the ACLU of Ohio. Advocates thought there was no legitimate reasoning behind the policy and sued in 2018, challenging a state approach they said made life for transgender people more difficult. ....
Monday, Feb. 1, 2021 Minnesota Judicial Center State of Minnesota, Respondent vs. Carrie Lynn Friese, Appellant – Case No. A19-0451: The police executed a warrant to search the home where appellant Carrie Lynn Friese was staying. During the search, the police found Friese and her 9-year-old child sitting on a mattress in one of the bedrooms. Tucked between the mattress and the wall, the police discovered a small purse that contained methamphetamine. Respondent the State of Minnesota charged Friese with knowing exposure of a child to methamphetamine, in violation of Minn. Stat. § 152.137, subd. 2(b) (2020), which prohibits a person from knowingly causing or permitting a child “to inhale, be exposed to, have contact with, or ingest methamphetamine, a chemical substance, or methamphetamine paraphernalia.” Following a trial, a jury found Friese guilty as charged. The court of appeals affirmed Friese’s conviction. ....
