Jerri Lange, Bay Area media legend, social activist, educator and author, has passed April 29, 2021 Jerri Lange’s spiritual journey on Earth has ended, but her legacy continues by Jackie Wright Los Angeles – Jerri Lange, one of the first African American journalists and television talk show hosts in the San Francisco Bay Area, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2021, from natural causes. Jerri Lange is interviewed here by the great photographer, Panther and martial artist Johnnie Burrell in a dynamic and fascinating conversation ranging from Jerri’s friendships with Sammy Davis Jr. and Maya Angelou to her philosophies of media and challenging what is expected of Black women in the US. ....
Jerri was an award-winning journalist who from 1969 to 1979 hosted community-based television shows in the Bay Area on KEMO; KBHK; KGO; and KQED, where she became the first black woman to host a national talk show, Turnabout, and where she served on the Board. ....

The protest, outside The Chronicle, resulted in Lange being hired as secretary to the newspaper’s executive editor, Scott Newhall, she wrote in her memoir. From that job, she went on to work at City Hall, then shifted to television when UHF channels started expanding the dial. ....
