Heat, heavy rain plagues some grain fields

Hot and humid conditions plus a threat of more showers and thunderstorms will continue to plague the Monroe County region leading up to the Fourth of July weekend, forecasters said.
However, the county mostly escaped any serious flooding woes from last week’s heavy rain, unless you’re a farmer whose soybean or corn fields are under water.
The cloudbursts and storms that drenched other areas of the state missed the county and went north, reports showed.
The Dundee Wastewater Treatment Plant, the county’s only official recording station for the National Weather Service, measured only three-quarters of an inch of moisture from June 21 through Sunday. The only significant rainfall measured was .74 of an inch on Friday, according to a stat sheet provided by David Rigel, plant superintendent.

Guest opinion: These are the facts regarding gun deaths in Utah

Often, when people react emotionally to subjects difficult for them to rationally process, the greatest casualty is the truth. Lynne and Ed Rutans’ response in the April 28 edition to Jerry Heck’s earlier editorial in support of the Second Amendment is no exception.
When people use percentages without referencing the base numbers, one should be interested in what those base numbers represent and why a specific date range was selected. The Rutans’ assertion that “rate of gun deaths increased by almost 40% from 2008 to 2018” and the choice of 2008 as the baseline would seem to indicate an immediately burgeoning firearm crisis, but is that true?

Guest opinion: Gun control measures are common sense, not a constitutional violation

Jerry Heck wrote in a guest editorial in the April 24-26 edition that: “Sadly, Joe Biden believes that ‘no amendment is absolute.’“ Actually, President Biden is on very strong ground here. No less a conservative stalwart than U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made it crystal clear in the District of Columbia v. Heller decision that the Second Amendment is not absolute. “(T)he right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. … (T)he right (is) not a right to keep and carry any weapons whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”
To begin with, the crisis of death and injuries from gun violence must be addressed effectively at both the national and state levels. In Utah, the rate of gun deaths increased by almost 40% from 2008 to 2018. Mr. Heck offers no potential solutions to that horrific increase. These are real deaths. Real family tragedies. Yet the Utah Legislature seems bent on making Utah the most gun-friendly state in the Union regardless of the number of Utah lives that costs. Mr. Heck may be willing to pay that cost in human life, but we are not.
