Black Officer Fired For Providing Information To Protesters, Files Lawsuit

Jervis Middleton has filed a lawsuit against his former employer because he feels he was fired for providing sensitive information about the police force to Black Lives Matter protesters.
Middleton joined the police force in 2007 and worked his way up to the position of sergeant. Shortly after his promotion, Middleton found himself at the center of a public investigation. An unnamed woman accused Middleton and his colleagues of surveilling her home after she ended a sexual relationship with him. A jury acquitted Middleton of official misconduct, but the police moved forward with an internal investigation. Ultimately, Middleton settled with the police department and he was demoted to patrol.

'This Is Bigger Than Me': Black Kentucky Police Officer Fired for Sharing Information with BLM Protesters Alleges Wrongful Termination, Retaliation

A Black policeman in Lexington, Kentucky, was fired earlier this year for providing sensitive information about several of his fellow officers to Black Lives Matter protesters who marched through the city last summer clamoring for police reform.
But in a lawsuit filed last month, the former cop denies the allegations that he fed protesters sensitive information that wasn’t already public knowledge and demands he be reinstated to the police force.
“I’ve always said that this is bigger than me,” Jervis Middleton told Atlanta Black Star. “I have my issue that I need to be made whole from. But there’s systemic changes that just have to be made, and it’s been there.”

Black ex-officer in Kentucky alleging racial discrimination in lawsuit over firing
A Black ex-officer is suing his former police department in Kentucky, alleging that racial discrimination led to his firing, The Associated Press reported.
In the lawsuit, Jervis Middleton alleges that the Lexington Police Department was a "hostile work environment," that he was targeted for his support of the Black Lives Matter movement and that errors were made in the charges against him, the AP reported.
The lawsuit also says that Middleton was singled out because of his race and that his white counterparts accused of graver offenses were not punished.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A former Kentucky officer who was fired from the Lexington Police department is alleging in a lawsuit that a culture of racial discrimination plagues the department and contributed to his dismissal. Jervis Middleton, who is Black, was fired in February after being accused of providing information to racial injustice protesters in Lexington. The city had small but daily protests in the wake of the police killings of George Floyd in Minnesota and Breonna Taylor in Louisville. Middleton was fired by the city council on two counts of violating department orders, The Lexington Herald-Leader reported . He is appealing his termination.
