A long road to recovery: Arts and entertainment industry looks forward to gathering again

Of all the industries, arts and entertainment arguably has suffered the most during the pandemic. It became a cultural death sentence as concert venues and theaters closed across the country and sources of income dried up.
“We’ve been impacted just like every other business in the county and beyond,” former Breckenridge Creative Arts CEO Matt Neufeld said in March. “I would say there has not been a single arts organization that didn’t have to completely rethink how they can fulfill their mission and serve our community in new ways.”
Those new ways became apparent over the summer. Breckenridge and Frisco Main streets were filled with murals. Groups performed outdoors at pop-up concerts, and actors put on theatrical cabarets in neighborhoods.

In-person art classes give chances to be creative

As restrictions loosen and the weather warms, more people are venturing out of the confines of their homes to resume favorite pastimes or pick up a new hobby. Art studios are ramping up in-person classes and workshops to provide a creative outlet.
in Frisco has offered drop-in classes since opening in 2018, and making tie-dye shirts outside has been a common summer sighting, but winter activity slowed down until the holidays. Drop-in classes now take place in the upstairs studio loft, and The Sunny Side Up Studio owner Ashlie Weisel said the format has been working well.

Local music organizations offer music lesson scholarships to middle and high school students

The National Repertory Orchestra and Breckenridge Music are offering subsidized private music lessons to middle and high school students through a new scholarship program, which aims to remove financial barriers for students and provide work for local musicians.
National Repertory Orchestra CEO Dave DePeters said the idea for the program came from music teachers at local schools.
“We went to them and said, ‘What is it that we can do for you that will support your program, and how can we best serve you and the community through the music program?’ And this is what they asked us to do,” DePeters said.
