ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Norman Mineta, who broke racial barriers for Asian Americans serving in high-profile government posts and ordered commercial flights grounded after the 9/11 terror attacks as the nation's federal transportation secretary, died Tuesday. He was 90.
Norman Mineta, who was the first Asian American ever to serve as a U.S. Cabinet secretary, died Tuesday at his home in Maryland.
Interned in wartime as a Japanese American, he went to Congress and became the first Japanese American cabinet officer, serving Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Mineta also broke racial barriers for Asian Americans in becoming mayor of San Jose, California.
