Barnstable County Administrator Moving To Private Sector

After spending the past five years in regional government, Barnstable County Administrator John (Jack) Yunits Jr. announced that he will be leaving his position.
Mr. Yunits’s contract is set to expire this Sunday, February 28, but the county administrator will not be leaving right away. In a phone interview with the Enterprise on Tuesday, February 23, Mr. Yunits said he will remain as the country administrator on an interim basis for “the next couple months.” He noted that he wants to help see the government through the Fiscal Year 2022 budgeting and also through part of the scheduling for COVID-19 vaccines.
When Mr. Yunits does leave, he expects the board to look internally within Massachusetts government to fill this role. He said the internal posting has been put up and that an internal search will help to minimize turnover.

John Yunits steps down as Barnstable County Administrator

By Jeannette Hinkle
Cape Cod Times
By the time John “Jack” Yunits Jr. assumed the role of Barnstable County administrator in February 2016, most county governments in the state had been disbanded.
Critics held that the regional form of government was redundant, a waste of taxpayer money, and by 2010, Yunits said, county government in Massachusetts had all but disappeared.
“But as I got onto the Cape, I began to realize that it had an immense value,” said Yunits, a former Brockton mayor. “Some of the smaller towns didn't have the financial capacity to grab the resources necessary to do specific bidding, to do professional studies, to work in a regional way by combining assets and leveraging that combination of assets into something more financially impactful.”

Mr. Yunits Stepping Down As County Administrator

Barnstable County Administrator John (Jack) Yunits, Jr. has announced that he is stepping down from his position.
Mr. Yunits made his announcement in an email dated Thursday, February 18. He was hired as county administrator in February 2016. He took over for Interim County Administrator Michael Brillhart who had been in place since 2013.
“My present contract expires in two weeks,” Mr. Yunits said, “and I have been blessed with another transformative opportunity to move back to the private sector.”
Mr. Yunits said the decision to leave his current post was a difficult one, as difficult as the decision he made 25 years ago to leave his law practice and run for mayor of Brockton, he said. He served as mayor from 1996 to 2006.

County Commissioners Discuss New Home For Cooperative Extension

A new building to house the Barnstable County Cape Cod Cooperative Extension tops the list of capital improvement projects discussed by the Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners at their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 13.
The Cooperative Extension, a department of the county government that plans and conducts educational programs based on local needs and interests, was operated out of the basement of the Registry of Deeds in the Barnstable County Complex until moving into a leased property in Yarmouth in June 2020.
According to Michael Maguire, the extension’s director, the lease costs the county approximately $89,000 per year.
Mr. Maguire described continuing the lease to house the department as a “losing proposition” for the county, as he expects leasing will become more expensive in the years to come.
