CEPD approves up to $150K for new position at SCCF

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commissioners recently approved up to $150,000 over two years for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to create and hire a sea level rise captain.
At a special meeting on Feb. 19, Chairman Rene Miville, Vice Chair John Silvia and Treasurer Dick Pyle voted 3-0 to fund the SLR “captain” position in the amount of up to $75,000 in year one and up to $75,000 in year two. Secretary Harry Kaiser and Commissioner Mike Mullins had excused absences.
Prior to the vote, SCCF Chief Executive Officer Ryan Orgera provided a presentation outlining the reasons for creating the proposed job, the CEPD’s role and requested funds, and duties of the position.

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commission swore in a new member at its recent meeting, along with heard an update on the LuxuryLav trailer installation at the Alison Hagerup Beach lot.
On Jan. 11, John Silvia was sworn in for Seat 4 after winning the spot in June when he was the only candidate to qualify for the upcoming 2020 election. The seat had been held by former Vice Chair Bob Walter, who did not seek re-election and termed out in December. The seats are for four-year terms.

CEPD appoints commissioners, names new chair

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commission recently approved full-term seats for two interim members and reorganized its leadership, as well as heard a presentation on Captiva’s tax contributions.
At the Dec. 7 meeting, the commissioners voted unanimously to appoint Rene Miville to Seat 2 and Richard Pyle to Seat 5. Pyle was appointed in November 2019 after former Commissioner Dave Jensen left, and later Miville was appointed in July after former Commissioner Michael Lanigan resigned.
Prior to the votes, Administrator Director John Riegert reported on other possible candidates.

Captiva panel OKs budget, elects new members

The Captiva Community Panel approved next year’s budget and elected candidates for two seats opening up in January at its recent meeting, as well as heard an update on the iguana control MSTU.
On Dec. 8, President David Mintz and staff presented a proposed budget for 2021 that consisted of $65,000 in revenues and $75,000 in operations expenses, resulting in a deficit of $10,000. The budget proposed for 2020 was also unbalanced, with $92,000 in revenues and about $103,938 in expenses.
During discussion, he explained that all or part of the funds budgeted for some expenses may not be needed in the end, like the $16,365 for the Sidewalk Engineering Committee, $14,000 for the Sea Level Rise Committee and $4,000 for the Captiva Code/Ordinance Committee, based upon various factors.
