Jail for Swindon man who left his mum fearing for her life

A DRUNK split his mum’s head open after she threw a drink at him, a court heard.
Michael Merchant was sent to prison for two years after he admitted GBH, breaching a restraining order banning him from contacting his mum and threatening to cause criminal damage.
Sentencing the 45-year-old, Judge Peter Crabtree told Merchant he’d attacked his mum in her own home, where she should have been safe.
“She was your mother and you should have treated her with respect,” he added.

Earlier, Swindon Crown Court heard Merchant had gone round his mum’s home in Exeter Street, in the Railway Village, on September 11 last year. ....

Fine for teenager who missed probation appointments

A TEENAGER who was spared custody in 2019 for a brutal attack on a would-be soldier missed probation appointments, a Swindon court heard.
But Kamal Barrow, now 19, was fined £50 after a judge heard the youngster was working long shifts at a factory and attending college courses.
The young man was just 16 when he was part of a group that attacked an 18-year-old in White Eagle Road in July 2018.
In late 2019, Swindon Crown Court heard the victim was kicked in the head and body. He suffered a broken cheekbone, nose and eye socket.
The victim said the assault had left him briefly unable to eat as his lip would split open and the injuries quashed his dreams of joining the army. ....

Drunk jailed after biting new girlfriend and stamping on her head

Kevin Wolton has been jailed for 16 months
A DRUNKEN lout who bit and stamped on his new girlfriend has been jailed – after a judge pulled stumps on the man’s deferred sentence.
Kevin Wolton had not long been released from prison when he struck up a relationship with the woman as they stayed in the same bed and breakfast in April last year.
Their five-day relationship ended on April 29 after Wolton subjected his new partner to a prolonged assault in which he stamped on her head and bit her ankle.
Last November, Judge Peter Crabtree deferred sentence for six months after hearing that the 38-year-old defendant was remorseful, had beaten an alcohol addiction while on remand and was committed to changing his ways. ....

Ashley Hunt, 31, from Chipping Sodbury, jailed for drug dealing

A GANG flooded Swindon with cannabis and cocaine – even dealing the drugs further afield.
The gang of six, three members of which have already been given more than 16 years’ worth of jail, supplied high purity cocaine and “designer” cannabis to dealers and directly to users.
The conspiracy can now be reported, after the only member of the alleged gang to fight his case to trial after he was found not guilty of conspiring to supply cocaine.

Ashley Hunt and Nicholas Bullock, both 31, were the two at the Bristol end of the chain.
Hunt was the link man – arranging drop-offs with Swindonian Kyle Rigley, 28. Bullock was the bagman; the man surveillance officers clocked handing over a shoebox-sized package to Jack Young, 29, and Kyle Rigley in Bristol on October 9, 2018. ....
