Jail for Swindon man who left his mum fearing for her life

A DRUNK split his mum’s head open after she threw a drink at him, a court heard. 
Michael Merchant was sent to prison for two years after he admitted GBH, breaching a restraining order banning him from contacting his mum and threatening to cause criminal damage.
Sentencing the 45-year-old, Judge Peter Crabtree told Merchant he’d attacked his mum in her own home, where she should have been safe. 
“She was your mother and you should have treated her with respect,” he added.

Earlier, Swindon Crown Court heard Merchant had gone round his mum’s home in Exeter Street, in the Railway Village, on September 11 last year.  ....

Fine for teenager who missed probation appointments

A TEENAGER who was spared custody in 2019 for a brutal attack on a would-be soldier missed probation appointments, a Swindon court heard.
But Kamal Barrow, now 19, was fined £50 after a judge heard the youngster was working long shifts at a factory and attending college courses.
The young man was just 16 when he was part of a group that attacked an 18-year-old in White Eagle Road in July 2018.
In late 2019, Swindon Crown Court heard the victim was kicked in the head and body. He suffered a broken cheekbone, nose and eye socket.
The victim said the assault had left him briefly unable to eat as his lip would split open and the injuries quashed his dreams of joining the army. ....

A FORMER Swindon Town youth star got involved in dealing cocaine in order to pay off drug and gambling debts, a court heard.
Kyle Rigley, 28, who was signed as a child but whose promising footballing career ended when he damaged a ligament in his ankle aged 17, was jailed for four years at Swindon Crown Court yesterday.
The Swindon man admitted conspiring with others in his hometown and Bristol to supply cocaine over nine days in late 2018.
Together with Jack Young, he was involved in dealing the class A drug in Swindon in late 2018 – buying cocaine from Bristol suppliers Ashley Hunt and Nicholas Bullock. ....

Machete teen launched ‘terrifying’ attack outside Tattoo parlour
A pair of youths armed themselves with a machete and samurai sword then set about another man as he enjoyed a cigarette outside a Toothill tattoo parlour, a court heard.
One of the two, a 16-year-old boy who cannot be named as he is under 18, was sent down for two years and four months at Swindon Crown Court for what the judge labelled a “terrifying” daytime attack.
Judge Jason Taylor QC said: “You approached another young male who was outside a tattoo shop where he was attending an appointment but he went outside to smoke a cigarette. He was therefore clearly targeted. ....
