An athlete from Uganda who went missing last week from his pre-Olympic training camp in Osaka Prefecture has been found and headed back to his home country late Wednesday, officials said.
The mayor of Izumisano, which hosted the training camp, said at a press conference that Julius Ssekitoleko initially expressed hopes of staying in Japan but was later convinced to go back to Uganda during a meeting with the head of the Ugandan team.

KAMPALA - Ugandan Olympic athlete who escaped in Japan has been arrested by the authorities there, an official said here Tuesday.
Donald Rukare, president of the Uganda Olympic Committee, told Xinhua that Julius Ssekitoleko, a weightlifter, was arrested on Tuesday after escaping from the Olympic village on July 16.
Ssekitoleko, together with other members, were meant to take a PCR COVID-19 test, but he instead vanished.

Confirming a man found in the central prefecture of Mie on Tuesday by police was Ssekitoleko, the Ugandan Embassy in Tokyo has said, "Any issues to do with alleged absconding from the duty he had been flown to perform in Japan and related disappearance from the training camp, will be handled appropriately upon his return."

The Ugandan weightlifter who went missing from a pre-Olympic training camp on Friday in Japan has been found.
The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) announced on Friday that Julius Ssekitoleko had left their training camp in Izumisano, Osaka, and his whereabouts were unknown.
The UOC's Secretary General, Beatrice Ayikoru, confirmed he had been found in a short video statement without revealing any further details.
"He has been located and is with the (unspecified) authorities in the office in Izumisano," she said.
"We are working together with our embassy in Tokyo to ensure that he flies safely to Uganda."
