As tens of thousands of Laredoans entered day three without electricity, and tens of thousands more with no water, it was not made clear when either of these essential services would be restored.
Tony Arce, manager of community affairs for American Electric Power, noted that on Wednesday morning, about 33,000 accounts across Laredo, Encinal, Zapata, Rio Bravo and El Cenizo were without power. By noon, around 2,000 of those accounts had been restored, and several thousand more a few hours later, Arce said. They hope to make more progress as more energy capacity comes online.

In the first weeks of COVID-19 vaccine distribution in Laredo, state vaccine data showed that of the 13,300 first doses that had been sent to Laredo, only about half had landed in people’s arms.
In reality all 13,300 doses had been administered, but some vaccine providers were having trouble inputting records into the state’s system, called ImmTrac2.

The City of Laredo has received 5,000 more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine following a successful one-day distribution event on Monday, the city announced Thursday.
Their appointment system opens at 8 a.m. Friday through vaccinatelaredo.com or by calling 3-1-1, and the vaccines will be distributed Saturday, collaborating again with local school districts.
A total of 3,860 doses will be available, according to the city — 3,088 appointments via the website and 772 via phone. The remaining 1,140 doses will be allocated to volunteers helping with the distribution and neighboring government entities in Laredo’s hospital region.

On President Joe Biden’s first day in office Wednesday, he signed an executive order that terminates the national emergency at the southern border and pauses all construction work on the border wall, beginning no later than a week from its signing.
This marks a huge step toward the primary goal of Laredo’s No Border Wall Coalition, which aimed to hold Biden to his campaign promise that “not another foot” of the border wall would be built under his administration.
