The City of Tempe is accepting nominations for awards that will honor Tempe residents who have made significant contributions to the city’s arts and culture including visual and performing artists. The city also seeks nominations in additional areas, such as cultural events, work and volunteerism in the creative sector, and activities focused on the city’s history, heritage, and culture.

Black History Month Design Replaces Anti-Trump Billboard in Phoenix

Moore was on hand during the installation, documenting the process as the wind whipped a corner of the new design upward to reveal the swastika-like dollar sign beneath it. She ll save the banners bearing Fiorito s earlier designs, which will become part of the artist s own documentation of her multiyear project on Grand Avenue.
“I wanted to have something really simple,” explains Moore, who says she’s donated the billboard space for the newest project for the next year. “There are a lot of important issues related to the Black Lives Matter movement that need to be addressed.”

Several designs by California artist Karen Fiorito have graced a Grand Avenue billboard during the past four years, including a controversial piece called
Trumpocalypse. Her latest design will be replaced in late January by a billboard set to include the text “Black History Matters.” It’s part of a Black History Month project being organized by Gizette Knight, whose plan to install a Black Lives Matter street mural in downtown Phoenix last year did not garner City Council approval.
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art recently received a grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. ....

The Best Things We Saw in Metro Phoenix in 2020


Amid their own isolation and economic challenges, Phoenix-area artists continued to create works that inspired thoughtful consideration of the shifting cultural, social, and political landscape. A lot of it just happened outside or online this year. Here’s a look at 11 of our favorites.
Social Justice Murals
Phoenix artists have a long history of creating art exploring social justice themes, from immigration to indigenous rights. This year, several artists created work reflecting the struggle against police brutality and racial injustice. Six artists collaborated on a Black Lives Matter mural in Roosevelt Row, and Antoinette Cauley’s portrait of James Baldwin was installed on the Ten-O-One building. Murals featured portraits of George Floyd, Dion Johnson, Breonna Taylor, and others killed by law enforcement officers were painted as well, highlighting the ways art and activism are often intertwined during times of social upheaval. ....
