Missed opportunities: "South Africa's most watched TV news channel" has tripped over its ego (yet again) - United Democratic Movement

Dear Mr Munzhelele
Missed opportunities: “South Africa’s most watched TV news channel” has tripped over its ego (yet again)
1. We have taken the time to consider your letter and let me state categorically, from the outset, that the United Democratic Movement (UDM) is extremely dissatisfied with the outcome of our meeting of 2 March 2021 if
2. Despite our attempts to meet eNCA halfway and to make the best of a bad situation. It is clear that the UDM and eNCA had been at two different meetings, and that the two groups had walked away with divergent understandings of what that meeting had meant and what the intended outcomes had been.

Speak softly and carry a big stick — together we can...

It was American president Teddy Roosevelt who said, “speak softly and carry a big stick…” and I think we can learn something from it.
Towards the end of the year of my 21st birthday in 1993 in downtown Johannesburg, the ANC called me and requested that I, with a select few, form part of the ANC election machinery in the run-up to 27 April 1994. I guess I was afforded this privilege because I was involved in an organisation, the South African Students Press Union (Saspu), which concerned itself with media politics — freedom of the airways, freedom of expression, building community media structures such as radio stations, print media training at universities and so much more.

Disinformation in a time of Covid-19: Weekly Trends in...

Week 4: Weekly trends — a year on, xenophobia and disinformation.
Through the Real411 platform, Media Monitoring Africa has been tracking disinformation trends on digital platforms since the end of March 2020. Using the Real411 platform, we have analysed disinformation trends that have largely focused on Covid-19. To date, more than 1,310 complaints have been submitted to the platform since March 2020, with relevant action being taken where necessary.
Racism, xenophobia, child abuse and gender-based violence are bad. It might seem an obvious statement, but after the events of the second week of March surrounding the Meghan and Harry interview, we know it isn’t just the royal family who are out of touch with reality. Apparently, the ones we should feel sorry for are poor Piers Morgan who “fell on his sword” thanks to “woke cancel culture”. Poor baby.

On Sunday, independent 24-hour news channel eNCA paid a fitting and final farewell to its TV host, Karima Brown, and did a reprise on some of her excellent interviews on her show,
The Fix, that relived the prowess of a brave-hearted commentator until Covid-19 ended her colourful and controversial career last week.
Coronavirus continued its ruthless march at the weekend, taking more high-profile lives of that of top business leader Peter Matlare and Durban’s first black mayor, Sipho Ngwenya, and scores of other victims.
Born Karima Semaar of Muslim faith in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, on May 20, in death, Karima Brown shone a light on the country’s controversial and complex media landscape. At 53, she lost her battle to survive coronavirus.

Ode to a Wild Woman (for Karima Brown)
How will we be in this world without you?
Oh wild woman
driven
You roared with a smile
Springing from your incisive mind
laced with wisdom
made public
pointed out
who run amongst wolves **
from wily traps
that constrains them
You watered
precious flowers bloom
when you find that soft shore
Your life's work
like the brightest of stars

ONE YEAR OF COVID-19 | 'Mistakes were made, lessons were learnt': Zweli Mkhize

Card image cap

Mkhize recalled how plans were put into motion to tackle the coronavirus after the first cases were detected in KwaZulu-Natal.
He said what was most heartening for him was when nurses at Greys Hospital, during his visit there a year ago, started singing that they did not fear Covid-19 and were ready to tackle the coronavirus.
“That was the beginning of the hope we all shared.
“The real crunch time came when we saw every day that the numbers were doubling. I recall several meetings with experts and professors to discuss this issue. It became clear the numbers and the way they were rising they would overwhelm the health system. Then came the expression of ‘flattening the curve’.”
