One tough job: Fire agencies battle mental health stigmas

Cal Fire
With fire seasons lasting longer and wildland firefighters working more hours, agencies around the basin are working to address mental health concerns among their crews.
Even during a mild fire season, firefighting is a physically and mentally taxing job. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Crews work 16-hour days on 14-day assignments and typically have two days off between each assignment.
“So, in a month, you see basically two days off, which is just grinding for the average wildland firefighter, who’s 18 to 25 years old and wants a life other than work,” said Tahoe Douglas Fire Fuels Management Chief Keegan Schafer.

Living with Fire awareness campaign and virtual webinar series for Lake Tahoe residents

Tahoe Resource Conservation District, the University of Nevada Reno Extension, fire districts, and land management agencies at Lake Tahoe are embarking on a six-month-long Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Campaign. This year's campaign will run from May through October with the theme: Is your home ignition resistant? The campaign encourages residents to get prepared for wildfires throughout the year by creating defensible space, addressing home ember vulnerabilities, and working together with neighborhood leaders and the community. Information and resources on how to prepare for wildfires will be continuously shared via their social media, Tahoe Living With Fire website, and monthly newsletter.
