Shocks factor: Tweet about MV COVID cases goes viral

A story in Friday’s Boston Globe about the number of COVID-19 cases on Martha’s Vineyard and, specifically, the lack of hospitalizations and deaths set off a Twitter storm over the Memorial Day weekend.
The Globe story quoted an epidemiologist, Michael A. Stoto, with the headline: “Harvard epidemiologist considers how Martha’s Vineyard has managed to avoid the worst of the pandemic.” Essentially, it’s a case of finding the cases, catching them early, and treating them, he told the Globe. “There haven’t been that many cases that have required hospitalizations — far fewer than you’d expect, given our numbers,” Stoto was quoted as saying.

The Vineyard Gazette - Martha's Vineyard News | County Set to Receive Hefty Government Windfall

Dukes County is set to receive more than $3.3 million in federal coronavirus relief funding — a hefty windfall nearly the double size of the county’s annual budget.
The money is part of the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, intended to combat the coronavirus pandemic, including public health and economic impacts.
Although much of the federal money will go directly to municipalities and states, more than $65 billion in aid has been allocated to county governments around the country. A total of $400 million has been allocated the six vestigial counties in Massachusetts: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Nantucket, Norfolk, and Plymouth.
The other eight state counties were abolished long ago, with cities and towns set to receive larger allocations of federal aid in lieu of the county funds.

Dukes County is working in conjunction with Cape and Island government and health officials to launch a vaccination campaign that will target the hundreds of thousands of seasonal visitors soon to arrive in our resort communities.
At a Dukes County Commission meeting Wednesday, commission chair Christine Todd said the campaign — which will include broadcast advertisements, posters, outreach to local businesses, and various incentives for getting vaccinated — will focus largely on the 20- to 30-year-old age group that comprises the majority of the Island’s seasonal workforce (although the messaging will reach a broad swath of the seasonal population).

County works to balance budget - The Martha's Vineyard Times

County works to balance budget
Dukes County officials are looking to balance the existing budget for fiscal 2022, which currently sits at a slight deficit of $463, with $2,296,314 in projected expenditures and $2,295,850 in revenues anticipated.
At a Dukes County Commission (DCC) meeting Friday, commissioners discussed the major drivers of the budget burden, with county manager Martina Thornton identifying the increase in general liability insurance by approximately 8 to 10 percent as one factor.
According to Thornton, the substantial increase in retiree insurance from around $25,000 last year to about $70,000 in this year’s budget creates “an even bigger gap between what we are collecting, and what we are being required to pay.”

Task Force Seeks Solutions To Woods Hole Freight Traffic

Members of a long-range planning task force are looking to fix the noise and traffic issues caused by the Steamship Authority’s Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard ferry operations.
The group, which has met five times so far, will continue to meet for the next year or so and will make recommendations to curb the issues. Heavy traffic, both auto and freight, on the Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs route draws ire from communities on both sides of Vineyard Sound. Members are still in the fact-gathering stage, Steven Sayers, former general counsel and consultant, told the Steamship Authority board of governors during their January 25 meeting. He updated the board on the progress of the task force and the traffic mitigation work group, both of which were formed last year.

Supporters of President Donald Trump, spurred on by his claims that his loss in the Nov. 3 election was based on fraudulent votes, stormed the U.S. Capitol Wednesday afternoon.
The breach of the congressional building came as Vice President Mike Pence was overseeing the certification of Joe Biden’s win in the Electoral College. Trump had called on Pence to overturn the election, but the vice president made it clear that wasn’t his role. Just before the protesters stormed the building, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gave a strong rebuke of President Trump and his claims of election fraud, saying that overturning the election would “damage our republic forever.”
