Covid-19 JN.1 Variant Cases Live News Updates: Singapore reported a notable rise in COVID-19 cases, with an increase from 763 to 965 new cases reported in the past week. Concurrently, the number of patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission increased from 23 to 32 during the same period. According to Thursday's report by TODAY newspaper, these figures mark the highest weekly hospitalization and ICU admission rates for COVID-19 patients in 2023.The predominant strain responsible for most infections is identified as JN.1, a sublineage of the Omicron variant's subvariant BA.2.86. Winter conditions in the northern hemisphere, coupled with a growing trend of people opting not to wear masks, have contributed to the upswing in COVID-19 cases, as highlighted by experts cited in the TODAY report.Despite these concerning trends, the Ministry of Health (MOH) stated that, based on available international and domestic data, there is currently no conclusive evidence indicating that BA.2.86 or JN.1 are more transmissible or result in more severe disease than other circulating variants.Additionally, the estimated number of COVID-19 cases recorded from December 10 to 16 reached a peak for the year, with 58,300 cases reported during epi-week 50. This surpasses the previous record of 56,043 cases in the preceding week, underscoring the escalating nature of the situation.
