The King and I: Zulu royal house conflict escalates –...

As his father would have done, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini addressed a media conference to condemn the thuggery and call for calm.
Another faction immediately issued its own statement to the same effect, having previously announced that only Prince Mbonisi speaks on behalf of the family.
They do not recognize Misuzulu as the king, and have informed Premier Sihle Zikalala of the royal family’s choice of Prince Simakade as the next in line. Although born out of wedlock, the businessman is the oldest of the late King Zwelithini’s sons.
The government has been requested to grant Prince Simakade “the same measure of care and courtesies afforded to His Royal Highness Prince Misuzulu by the provincial government until such time that the dispute on who should succeed His Majesty the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu is resolved”.

New King of the Zulus is whisked away from his public unveiling

South Africa's new King of the Zulus's opublic unveiling ended in chaos as he was whisked away by bodyguards as questions continue over whether he is the rightful heir to the throne.
The controversy over the next king, a largely ceremonial role but one with great significance for South Africa and its 12 million Zulu people, has arisen after the death in March of King Goodwill Zwelithini, who had reigned since 1968.
Zwelithini apparently named one of his six wives, Queen Mantfombi Shiyiwe Dlamini Zulu, as the 'regent of the Zulu kingdom' in his will.
However, she also died after holding the title for only a month, throwing the royal succession into turmoil.

Nongoma – In a majestic speech delivered at Khangelamankengane palace in Nongoma on Friday, Prince Misuzulu Zulu, the senior Zulu prince who is tipped to be named as the next Zulu king has called for unity in the troubled royal court and entire Zulu nation.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by his sister, Princess Ntandoyenkosi Zulu, Prince Misuzulu said the royal court must emulate his father, the recently departed King Goodwill Zwelithini, who was a man of peace and forge unity.
The call comes as there are fears that the tension and public spats in the royal court would flare up again shortly after the burial of Queen Regent, Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu.

The Zulu monarchy in South Africa has been plunged into controversy following the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini and - weeks later - the regent.
It has led to a vicious power struggle for the throne - royals are fighting it out in court, hurling insults in public, and fuelling rumours of the poisoning of rivals.
The BBC's Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg looks at some of the key players in the royal drama:
Father of the nation: King Goodwill Zwelithini
Born on 14 July 1948, he was the eighth monarch of the Zulu nation. Before he could take over from his father in 1971, he was forced to go into hiding for three years following death threats.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi: 'Stop speculating about the throne'

Dlamini-Zulu passed away on Thursday, 29 April and tributes have been pouring in since the news broke.

Since King Goodwill Zwelithini’s passing speculations and questions about who is next in line for the throne were mounting until the late Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu was instated as the king’s replacement for three months.
“People should stop speculating about who is going to be next in line for the throne; the public should respect the king’s children, allow them to mourn the sad passing of their parents instead of focusing on the next king regent.”
