Plant-based food retail sales grow 27% to $7b in 2020

U.S. sales of plant-based meat, dairy and eggs outpace sales of conventional products for third consecutive year.
Apr 08, 2021
New data released by the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) and The Good Food Institute (GFI) shows U.S. retail sales of plant-based foods continued to increase by double digits in 2020, growing 27% and bringing the total plant-based market value to $7 billion. This growth in dollar sales was consistent across the nation, with more than 25% growth in every U.S. census region.
The plant-based food market grew almost twice as fast as the total U.S. retail food market, which increased 15% in 2020 as COVID-19 shuttered restaurants and consumers stocked up on food amid lockdowns. Fifty-seven percent of households now purchase plant-based foods, up from 53% in 2019. GFI and PBFA commissioned the data from SPINS and custom refined the data to reflect only plant-based products that directly replace animal-based products.

Sales of plant-based foods that directly replace animal products - including meat, seafood, eggs, dairy, condiments and meals containing plant-based alternatives - grew by 27% to $7bn in measured channels in the year to December 27, 2020, according to SPINS data* commissioned by The Good Food Institute (GFI) and the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA).
The SPINS dataset (natural enhanced and conventional multi-outlet) excludes several leading retailers that don't share their data, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, ALDI, Costco and convenience stores, and does not include e-commerce sales, so the actual figure is likely somewhat higher.

In a year of splashy news for plant-based meat — skyrocketing sales!the new McPlant! —one of the biggest developments in the field went oddly underreported.
In the last three months of 2020, some of the biggest companies in the world announced major moves into the plant-based meat space.
In September, Tesco — the UK’s largest supermarket chain — announced plans to increase sales of plant-based products 300 percent by 2025. Last month, Unilever — the world’s 19th largest food and beverage manufacturer — set a new annual global sales target of $1.2 billion from plant-based meat and dairy within the next five to seven years, about five times what it forecasts it will make from plant-based sales in 2020. And a few days later, IKEA announced that half its restaurant meals and 80 percent of its packaged food offerings would be plant-based by 2025.
