41-year-old Georgetown, Ohio, resident Brian D. Jones was killed in a single vehicle crash Monday afternoon at milepost 103 on Interstate 64 near Wayne County. According to Illinois State Police, at approximately 5:15, Jones was westbound in a construction zone when he struck a concrete bridge barrier multiple times. He left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. Jones was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Wayne County Coroner; the roadway was closed during crash investigation and re-opened at approximately 4:30 a.m. Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 has released the video of an officer-involved shooting in the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office in McLeansboro on October 20th, 2021. 30-year-old Herrin resident Aaron J. Sealy was in custody after being arrested by McLeansboro police and was taken to the Sheriff's Office. While in a chair, he was able to loosen his handcuffs and grab and discharge a fire extinguisher toward a McLeansboro officer and Hamilton County deputy. Both officers ordered him to drop the extinguisher before discharging their firearms, and Sealy was struck once. Police rendered aid to Sealy until he was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, and he was eventually taken to a regional hospital. Sealy is currently in custody. A third Sandoval teen in the same car, 18-year-old Kaleb Calhoun, was airlifted to St. Louis. Officials say Rollinson was eastbound on New U.S. 50, drove through standing water, and hydroplaned. The car spun around and crossed into westbound lanes, and its rear was struck by a westbound truck driven by 43-year-old Rockford resident Oscar Emilio Sanchez-Ferrera. He and a 15-year-old passenger were uninjured. 54-year-old Louisville resident Matthew D. Bickley was arrested over the weekend in connection to the theft of a transport vehicle from the Clay County Sheriff's Office. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal damage to state-supported property, and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. He was taken to the Clay County Jail and held, pending the posting of bond. Southern Illinois registered another earthquake Monday evening. Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey say the 2.3 magnitude quake was recorded about seven kilometers northwest of Mt. Vernon at 7:28. The most recent significant earthquake in the area was in 2008 with a 5.2 magnitude quake. Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced more than $11 million in funding to family planning clinics around the state. He says federal grant and matching state money will help boost the efforts of the clinics providing reproductive care, including abortions. Federal money will come from the Title Ten Program, which Illinois recently rejoined. The Fairfield District 112 Board of Education met last night and worked through a host of personnel items. Stacey Robbins was appointed as Special Education Coordinator, and Jennifer Hackney and Laura Balding were employed as certified teachers. Delilah White was employed as seventh-grade girls basketball coach, and Yvette Combs was re-employed as Athletic Director; coaching staffs were rehired, and Selena Musgrave was employed as a paraprofessional. Fairfield FFA member Lainie Clark has won the State FFA Agri-Science Fair in the area of Plant Systems. Her project centered on the effects of chlorine water on the rate of plant growth. Clark will now advance to the National Finals and will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in Springfield, which is scheduled for next month. Fairfield businessman Gary Carter says the hearing date for his appeal to be put back on the ballot for the upcoming primary election has been postponed to tomorrow at 3. The hearing will take place on Zoom; it was originally set for Monday at 10 but was delayed due to the opposing attorneys not being prepared. Early voting begins Thursday. The Edwards County Board of Education met last night. It set a budget hearing for June 20th at 6:45 and voted to keep school fees the same, with the exception of lunch fees, which will go up 10 cents. The board read the new student handbook, which will prohibit the sharing of food and allow the use of electronic devices before school in the gym area only. After executive session, members approved a 3.5 percent salary increase for Superintendent David Cowger. The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced a road closure near the Hamilton-Franklin County Line. Beginning today, Illinois 14 will be closed between Thompsonville Road and Ewing Road, weather permitting. The road is anticipated to be open by 3 p.m. on May 27th. The closure is necessary to facility construction of a temporary detour road to be used during replacement of a bridge due to mine subsidence. The IDPH reported four new cases of COVID-19 in Wayne County since Friday afternoon. Marion County added nine cases, Jefferson County seven, Clay County five, Richland and Lawrence counties three, White County two, and Edwards and Wabash counties one. Hamilton County held steady on the state website. As a state, Illinois announced 16,856 new cases and five additional deaths. U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is promoting the rural development arm of his agency. He says the recently approved infrastructure plan will help rural areas. He put a spotlight on increased rural broadband access, which has long been discussed but had $65 billion put up to enact under the bill. The law gives local prosecutors more authority to go after smash-and-grab criminals in other counties, and the Illinois Attorney General could prosecute via a statewide grand jury. The law also creates the "Inform Act" to crack down on stolen goods being sold online. River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 8.05 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.32 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 10.28 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 2.13 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 5.68 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 11.21 feet. Today's crude oil price is $107.25, up $3.75 from yesterday. The June crude oil price is $114.57, up $5.12 from yesterday morning.

Brown had previously pled guilty to the offense of Possession of Methamphetamine and was found to have violated his probation. Edwards County State's Attorney Eric A. St Ledger prosecuted the case on behalf of the People of the State of Illinois and attorney Melissa Doran represented the defendant, Kody L. Brown. 50-year old Michael W. Bowdoin of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, was sentenced Tuesday, March 22, 2022 to a total of 4-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections to be followed by 4-years of mandatory supervised release in Edwards County Case No. 2020-CF-22. Michael W. Bowdoin had entered a guilty plea for the offense of Aggravated Domestic Battery. Edwards County State's Attorney Eric A. St Ledger prosecuted the case on behalf of the People of the State of Illinois and attorney Brian Shinkle represented the defendant, Michael W. Bowdoin. 43-year old Robert W. Allison of Fairfield, Illinois, was sentenced Tuesday, March 29, 2022 to a total of 10-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections in Edwards County Case No. 2021-CF-11. Robert W. Allison had entered a guilty plea to the offense of Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Deliver. Edwards County State's Attorney Eric A. St Ledger prosecuted the case on behalf of the People of the State of Illinois and attorney Brian Shinkle represented the defendant, Robert W. Allison. On March 28th at approximately 6:40 p.m., Deputies with the Wayne County Seriff's Office conducted an investigation involving the distribution of methamphetamine. During the investigation Tina M. Peddicord, 50 of Geff, was arrested for delivery of methamphetamine. A subsequent search of Peddicord's vehicle was conducted. During the search of the vehicle numerous illegal items were located including; a bag containing suspected crack cocaine, a bag containing suspected methamphetamine, prescription pills (Controlled substances, $325 in US Currency, and a loaded handgun. Peddicord has been charged with Unlawful delivery of methamphetamine; Unlawful possession of controlled substance x2 (crack/pilss); Armed violence; Unlawful use of a weapon; and Possession of drug paraphernalia. Peddicord is being held at the Wayne County Jail with bond set at $5,000 cash. House Republican Leader Jim Durkin and State Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) held a capitol press conference to push for victim-focused reforms to the Prisoner Review Board and criminal justice system in Illinois. One Illinois Prisoner Review Board member resigned on Monday, while another was rejected by the Senate. Monday's developments represented the latest shakeup on the governor-appointed board that has seen heavy Republican scrutiny in the past year as the Senate repeatedly delayed hearing several of Pritzker's appointees to the board that determines whether offenders should be released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody and what the terms of their release should be. State Representative Patrick Windhorst Today marks the Centennial Anniversary for the ISP. The agency began with just a few troopers who were charged with making sure heavy trucks didn't damage newly built roads. Today, the ISP has more than 2,900 employees, including over 1,800 sworn officers. The State Police now has a much broader mission, including Criminal Investigations and DNA Testing, and has evolved to include Forensics, Air Support, K-9 Units and more. As Russian attacks continue against the Ukraine, oil prices are soaring. Sanctions against Russia mean US producers are having to up their efforts. This means oil drilling operations will rise. Seth Whitehead, executive director of the Illinois Petroleum Resources Board says right now, demand for oil and gas is at an all-time high. Supply was already down over the last two years due to COVID-19 and removing Russia from the international market just makes things worse. He says that independent companies are about to start drilling more and more in our area to try to compensate for that and get prices back down. Whitehead says there are some challenges, particularly in workforce shortages, but with prices this high, everyone has the incentive to put a stop to it. The Illinois basin provides 10-12 million barrels of oil a year, the U.S. uses around 23 million barrels each day. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has scored poorly in a new ranking of the country's Governors on their economic policy performance. In the 2021 Report released by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Governor Pritzker ranked 47th in the nation, or fourth worst in America. The list of twelve criteria items includes public pension liabilities, income taxes, corporate taxes, job creation, and new this year, how the federal pandemic relief tax funds were spent. The report's bottom three Governors behind Pritzker were also Democrats, California's Gavin Newsom, Rhode Island's Daniel McKee, and New Mexico's Michelle Grisham. The report's top three Governors on the list were all Republicans, South Dakota's Kristi Noem, Utah's Spencer Cox, and Florida's Ron DeSantis. The City of Fairfield will conduct a city-wide clean-up next Saturday, April 10
th from 8 to 11 a.m. The service is for city residents only, and a utility bill stub or driver’s license will be required to dispose of waste; commercial contractors will not be allowed. People should line up on East King Street toward the Street & Bridge Department. Dumpsters will be on hand for general waste, metal and appliances, and tires. Light truck tires can be disposed of for three dollars each, passenger car tires two dollars each, and ATV tires one dollar each. Electronics, construction and remodeling debris, yard waste, liquid paint, batteries, concrete, bricks, asbestos items, and items considered hazardous waste will not be accepted.
