DUBAI: There is another virtual fashion week in the UAE to look forward to. Following the success of the sixth edition of Arab Fashion Week, “Hala China” has just launched a nine-day event that celebrates Emirati fashion from across the UAE. Titled “Emirati Fashion Days,” the event is a virtual show running until April 11, with the support of the UAE Embassy in China, the Chinese Textile Information Center, and the Chinese Fashion Association.
The nine-day event will display the creations of more than 17 local brands and fashion designers in the UAE, including Zeena Zaki, Houida Biridi, Siham al Hajji, Diana Mardeni, Ali Assad and more, who all hand-picked the locations from which their collections will be livestreamed.

Made in partnership with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (which works to fight HIV in South Africa), Dior Beauty tapped Portman, Shahidi, architect India Madhavi, Chinese actress Li Bingbing, model Dilone, South African figure skater Yuna Kim and writer Leïla Slimani to share their stories in a series of inspiring videos.

The Chinese, who have been innovators in so many areas, are now revealed to have formalized the BFF relationship as long ago as 1839. In Hunan, when two women were Best Friends Forever, they were laotong. This was a relationship that could begin with the agreement of their parents before birth, and persist independent of marriage, children or the changing fortunes of life. It is at the heart of Lisa See's period best-seller Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and has inspired a film that carries the concept into the present day.

The Meg is self-aware as to the ludicrous concept behind it all and the over-the-top action sequences born from that, while the other half is the kind of movie (directed by
National Treasure helmer Jon Turteltaub, and scripted by a host of names adapting the novel by Steve Alten) that seems to think there is merit in throwing in superfluous emotional weight. Deep-sea diving rescuer Jonas (Jason Statham, now boozing it up somewhere in Thailand after losing his career on an unsuccessful mission that also resulted in the possibility of him being insane from claims of witnessing a prehistoric kind of gigantic shark) is brought back into the game; one of the crew in danger is his ex-wife. The battle against the titular Megalodon shark is personal and grounded in revenge/salvation. Jonas is also falling in love with someone else.

CMC Pictures announces future movie projects

CMC Pictures, a film company specializing in the production and foreign distribution of Chinese films, showcased its future projects on Wednesday, including such upcoming movies as "The Meg 2," "Three Old Boys" and "I Remember."
"The Meg 2" is the sequel to the successful 2018 Chinese-American co-production "The Meg." The original installment was directed by Jon Turteltaub, starred Jason Statham and Li Bingbing, and grossed 1.05 billion yuan in China, $143 million in America, and $530 million worldwide.

This is the ideal Saturday night film. Jason Statham plays a marine scientist fighting to protect those he loves from the gigantic beast his experiments have freed from the deep. This is Jaws on steroids and while it takes a while to get going the latter half of it is highly enjoyable and packed full of action and in-jokes from the world's most famous shark movie. The Stath leads a solid cast that includes Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson and Li Bingbing.
