New Reform Effort Will Require Teenagers To Undergo Deescalation Training

CHICAGO In an attempt to address community outcry over recent police encounters, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced a reform effort Friday that would require all city teenagers to undergo mandatory deescalation training. “As a society, we depend upon the professionalism of 13- and 14-year-old boys in tense situations like these to prevent police officers from doing anything rash,” said the Chicago mayor in a press conference outlining the 10-class pilot program introducing teenagers to techniques such as speaking in a calm voice, maintaining eye contact, and using empathic listening to ensure cops never feel threatened in potentially violent situations. “Frankly, it’s vital to public safety that our teenagers learn how to speak to the police so that they defuse, rather than escalate, these emotionally charged incidents. When a 15-year-old realizes that a cop cornering him in an alleyway is heavily armed, the teen needs to remember that he’s the only one with the expertise to keep ....

Cell Phone Data Shows Chicagoans Are Changing Up Their COVID Social Patterns

I think, you know, this just reflects that people are excited for the warm weather, feeling good about vaccine and I think just sort of wishing that COVID was over, Arwady said.
Last year, cell phone data showed that people across the city were at home throughout the day a little more than half of the time. Once social distancing guidelines and the statewide stay-at-home order took effect, that number jumped to nearly 80%.
Arwady said last April that the city was working with health data company BlueDot to use anonymous location data from cell phones across the city to track movements. ....

Chicago COVID vaccine: United Center vaccination site opens after brief delay, scheduling confusion

The United Center and Des Plaines mass vaccination sites opened for appointments Thursday, and tens of thousands were snatched up in mere hours.
Many United Center appointments remain open. Of the 110,000 total appointments, officials said Tuesday only 40,000 were booked by Illinois residents 65 and older, and only 10,000 by Chicagoans in 1B plus. The rest, set aside after most senior appointments, went to people outside the city.
We have to do this in a way that is consistent with equity, and that s critically important, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.
Officials say the 50,000 unfilled appointments are not yet publicly available. Instead, Chicago and Cook County officials are conducting targeted outreach. The city is prioritizing five zip codes: 60608 on the Near West Side, and 60652, 60620, 60619 and 60649 on the South Side. ....

Chicago Monuments Project committee not making transparent decisions, Better Government Association reports

CHICAGO (WLS) The Chicago committee making decisions about the city s monuments is doing so behind closed doors, according to the Better Government Association.
BGA senior investigative reporter David Jackson joined ABC 7 Chicago Saturday morning to talk about his latest report on transparency.

Chicago police warrant policy changes proposed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, CPD Superintendent David Brown in wake of botched Anjanette Young raid

CHICAGO (WLS) Changes are in the works for the Chicago Police Department after a botched raid on a woman s home where she was handcuffed naked.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown laid out new policies for how police execute search warrants on Wednesday.
The new policies will involve a lot more oversight and accountability, with the goal of preventing bad raids that have given the police department a black eye and forced the mayor to fight to regain public trust.
The mistaken raid on the home of Anjanette Young two years ago put the spotlight on how Chicago Police execute search warrants, what they do to make sure they don t storm the wrong home, and how they treat people once inside. ....
