Best Comic of the Week: Stillwater #7 – This series is really heating up.  A group of ex-Marines have been brought into the town in an effort to bolster the Judge’s position, but he didn’t know anything about the plan, making it kind of awkward.  Daniel sees this as his chance to run with his mother, but that doesn’t work out either, and then in a surprise at the end, we learn what the kids of the town have been up to.  Chip Zdarsky and Ramón Perez have made this one of my favourite books of the last year.

Best Comic of the Week: SWORD #5 – In the aftermath of the King in Black event, it’s time to resurrect the people who died fighting Knull on Krakoa.  Magneto has requested that Fabian Cortez be bumped up the queue, but largely, it seems, in order to humiliate him in front of the Quiet Council.  Cortez has never been an interesting or likeable character until Al Ewing got his hands on him, so I enjoyed this issue.  I also like the way Ewing is building on events that have happened in his Guardians of the Galaxy run (Snarkwar), and is quietly taking over his own corner of the Marvel Univ...

The Best Comic of the Week: Two Moons #1 – I’ve been looking forward to this comic since I saw it in Previews.  John Arcudi is writing a horror series set in the US Civil War.  That, with some pages of Valerio Giangiordano’s art, was enough to guarantee the preorder.  This issue introduces the main character, Two Moons, a young Pawnee man who was raised by a white family, and who is fighting on the side of the Union in the war.  He’s plagued with visions he doesn’t understand, and things take a very dark turn during a small skirmish.  I love historical fiction grounded in a str...

Best Comic of the Week: Rain Like Hammers #1 – Brandon Graham has a way of creating worlds that are completely incredible, but also feel very relatable.  In this new series, he gives us Eugene, a worker in a moving city who doesn’t appear to have any friends or much purpose.  He’s new to Elephant, having worked hard to get this posting, but now finds it pretty isolating and disenchanting.  Graham never explains why all people seem to live on these roving cities, but when one of them suffers a catastrophe, we get to see more of how society appears to operate.  Eugene’s days of sitt...
