COLLEGE PARK, Md., April 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of Maryland celebrated the formal installation of Dr. Darryll J. Pines as its 34th President with
a week of events showcasing the university's excellence. During his investiture ceremony, President Pines announced five bold actions that reflect the university's mission, values, traditions and culture and reinforce his two priorities for his leadership: ensuring excellence in all that we do and creating a more inclusive, multicultural community for all.
"This is our time to reinvent our University," said President Pines. "This is the time to examine the future of learning to enhance the student experience; the future of work for faculty and staff to reach a new level of excellence; and a new model of research to accelerate and advance science and human understanding. I look forward to engaging with the entire community around these shared goals -- to re-imagine our campus and community as a modern flagship research university in the third decade of the 21st century."

The pipa, sometimes called the Chinese lute, is a four-stringed instrument that has been around for 2,000 years. Wu Man, together with the ASO, will perform the "Concerto for String Orchestra and Pipa" by American Chinese composer Tan Dun.
The concerto is complimented by Johannes Brahms' Serenade No. 1 and the welcome return of the ASO's woodwind and brass sections, whom until recently have been prevented from performing indoors due to Covid safety protocols.

Greg Fowler named president of University of Maryland Global Campus

ADELPHI, Md. — Gregory Fowler grew up in Albany, one of eight children. His mother was a secondary school teacher, and other family members included ministers and pastors.
Fowler realized from an early age the power of education and the need to engage with people and help them wherever they are in life. These lessons have driven his success as a distinguished scholar, faculty member and innovative administrator during his 25-year career in higher education.
Based on that extensive track record of leadership in helping students succeed, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents announced recently that Fowler has been selected as the next president of University of Maryland Global Campus. He will begin his new position on Jan. 4.
