Best-selling author Anne Griffin back with her second book

Best-selling author Anne Griffin back with her second book
‘Listening Still’ is set for release in the UK and Ireland on 29 April
By Claire Corrigan
From the bestselling author of ‘When All is Said’ comes a delicious new novel about a young woman who can hear the dead – a talent which is both a gift and a curse- titled ‘Listening Still.’
Mullingar bestselling writer Anne Griffin spoke to Topic this week about life as an author in lockdown and finishing her second book after the huge success of her debut novel.
“Lockdown meant that a lot of the work that I had planned for 2020 was cancelled. I had been due to go to Estonia, Germany, Italy and the US. However, I managed to do a few things online but it was a bit of a disaster in terms of the international launch of the book (‘When All is Said’).”

Books to look out for in 2021

Books to look out for in 2021
Irish fiction
New work that has been a long time coming generates a particular shiver of anticipation.
Small Things Like These (Faber, October) will be Claire Keegan’s first new work since her novella Foster, still a bestseller 10 years on. Her publisher says: “An exquisite wintery parable, Claire Keegan’s long-awaited return tells the story of a simple act of courage and tenderness, in the face of conformity, fear and judgment.”

Poetic champions and fiction greats

Art imitates life and the novels of 2021 confirm just how true this is. Writers, like everyone else, found themselves confined this year and the result is the recurring leitmotif of family, pervading almost every fiction genre from crime to coming-of-age novels, from historical fiction right through to dystopia. Here are some examples from the leading titles of the new year.
January
Billy O'Callaghan's Life Sentences (Jonathan Cape) is a family saga sweeping from famine Ireland right through to the 1980s. The Push (Penguin) by Ashley Audrain is a psychological thriller about a mother who believes her daughter to be bad, with shades ofWe Need to Talk About Kevin.

Best in class: Our top writers pick their favourite 2020 titles

Not the least of our losses in this plague year was one of our greatest poets, Derek Mahon. Washing Up (Gallery Press) is a glorious late harvest - vigorous, funny, angry, blithe - beautifully produced, like all Gallery editions, and including, appropriately, a lovely tribute to another luminary of the dead poets' society, Ciaran Carson. Mahon's last is vividly alive. Vincent van Gogh: A Life in Letters, edited by Nienke Bakker, Leo Jansen and Hans Luijten (Thames & Hudson) is a judicious selection from the magnificent six-volume Complete Letters of 2009. Had he not been a painter, Van Gogh could have made his name as a writer, as his correspondence shows. Impassioned, often heartbreaking, furious, funny and tender, these letters form a unique testament from a pivotal figure in 19th-century art. For my third choice, I am going to flout the rules by picking a book to be published in January 2021: Billy O'Callaghan's Life Sentences (Cape) is a superb and moving novel of family life in Cork spanning a large part of the 20th century. O'Callaghan is one of our finest writers, in the tradition of John McGahern and Brian Friel, and this is his best work yet.
