I’m running for school board because in the midst of a crisis we need experienced leaders. This pandemic has been devastating to our children and our entire educational community. Reopening schools safely and rapidly requires working as a team. Rachel Silverman Nemeth and I have been a core part of the RBUSD team for years now. That’s why we’re endorsed by so many leaders in the educational community and elected officials.

Patronizing local businesses
As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated local businesses of all sizes and throughout all industries. As owner of The Londoner salon, I know first-hand the immense and seemingly never-ending struggles of just having to keep the doors open and my staff employed. And though I personally do not agree with the current limits on (personal) service-based industries, I understand the need to help protect the community as a whole, which is why I am writing this letter.
I want to remind all residents of the South Bay community to please continue supporting your local businesses. My team and I have been very fortunate to have extremely supportive clients who continue to purchase gift cards and products so I assure you, every little bit helps.

Dear ER:
Daring to question the Governor Gavin Newsom’s and Barbara Ferrer’s lockdowns is a red line not to be crossed for Manhattan Beach Council Members Hildy Stern and Nancy Hersman. (“The Great Hadley Debate,” Easy Reader, November 29, 2020). Stern is adamant that such thoughts are dangerous: “We have the model for the misguided strategy of herd immunity in Sweden, where this approach drastically, and fatally, failed.” But Sweden’s cumulative death total is actually lower than LA County (7,000 vs. 7800) even though both have a population of 10 million. Shouldn’t our local elected leaders be asking why nine months of restrictions haven’t produced any better results than Sweden’s, which has kept schools and restaurants open and has no mask mandate?

LETTERS: COVID guidelines for schools, residential development and thanks from trustee : Week of December 10

Gatherings in Manhattan Beach
The nation, state and county all recognize the worsening pandemic crisis. Both California and LA County have issued strict guidelines to reduce the spread. In contrast, our MB City Council asks people to sit and gather in support of local businesses.
While the support of our local merchants and their employees is absolutely the right thing to do, encouraging people to gather in public places and suggesting that they disinfect the areas when they leave continues to send the wrong message at the wrong time. In a city where simple, everyday mask compliance remains a struggle, the thought that people would actually make the effort to sanitize is beyond the pale. More than likely, people will use the outdoor spaces to eat or drink what they just purchased for take-out, thus requiring them to take off their masks for extended periods with non-household members, defeating the very purpose of the new health orders.
