Canadian company gets Iceland energy buy-out green light | IceNews

A sizeable minority within the cabinet of the Reykjavik city council intends to request that the details of Reykjavik Energy’s dealings with Canada’s Magma Energy over the sale of its stake in HS Orka be made public.
The board of Reykjavik Energy yesterday voted to accept Magma’s offer to buy 16.58 percent of HS Orka. The company will also purchase a 15 percent share from the Town of Hafnarfjordur.
The sale of Icelandic energy resources to foreigners has never happened before and has caused considerable controversy; especially as Reykjavik Energy is a publicly owned company. Some argue that foreign investment will bring new opportunities, experience and credibility to the Iceland’s huge renewables market, while others feel that energy independence is paramount and that public assets should not be sold to private firms – especially as Iceland is already a world leader and expert nation in renewable energy production. ....

Iceland's Erupting Volcano Is a Window Into Life on Mars

The Atlantic
A volcano erupting on the island is a living replica of what once happened on Mars.
8:00 AM ET
After 15 months of intense and disruptive earthquakes on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, the region finally let off some pressure. On March 19, lava roared out of the ground in the uninhabited valley of Geldingadalur, marking the first time in 800 years that this strip of land has been rocked by an eruption.
Volcanologists are thrilled, but this spectacle isn’t just an opportunity to explore Iceland’s fiery underworld. It’s also a window into another world entirely. “The eruption is, in my view, a fantastic analogue for Mars,” says Christopher Hamilton, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona. ....

Volcanic eruption looms in Iceland after 18,000 earthquakes struck over the past week

Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) detected around 3,300 earthquakes.
The earthquake swarm centers around Reykjanes Peninsula, a densely populated region south of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik. Authorities now expect one of two volcanoes in the peninsula, Mount Keilir and Mount Fagradalsfjall, to erupt in the next few days, which would be the first in the region in 800 years.
Earthquake swarm forbodes volcanic eruption
The swarm started on Feb. 24 with a 5.7 magnitude earthquake, the largest to date, and several rumblers followed since. Authorities are currently analyzing sensor and satellite-based monitoring data to determine the cause of the swarm. But most suspect that an intrusion of magma into Earth’s crust has been driving the event. ....

Signs that Earth was once almost entirely molten found in ancient rock

Hanika Rizo
Chemical signatures in 3.7-billion-year-old basalt rocks from Greenland support the long-held theory that Earth was once almost entirely molten.
We know very little about what early Earth looked like – but one theory says that at several times it was almost entirely molten, a magma ocean. These oceans were probably caused by a series of massive impacts with other objects in our solar system that each generated enough energy to melt our planet’s interior. One of the last such collisions is thought to have formed the moon.

Now, Helen Williams at the University of Cambridge and her colleagues have found evidence of these early magma oceans in ancient rocks. ....

Ancient Magma From Earth's Early Days Discovered in Rocks From Greenland

Ancient Magma From Earth s Early Days Discovered in Rocks From Greenland
12 MARCH 2021
Our planet s surface has seen a thing or two in its 4.5 billion-odd-years of existence. Weathered by ocean, corroded by wind, and remolded by the relentless turnover of plate tectonics, we might assume nothing remains of Earth in its most primitive state.

Yet an analysis of rocks from a formation in Greenland reveals traces of a geological journey that took place at a time when our rocky world was little more than a molten ocean of magma, and it could fill in missing details on our ancient past.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK and Carleton University in Canada paid particular attention to signature levels of iron isotopes in a powdered sample of basalt taken from the northern parts of the Isua Greenland Belt (ISB). ....
