Dallas Matarautahi Taukiri (Ngāti Kiriwai/Tainui) calls himself the Queen of Kāwhia.
He gets to check out everyone arriving or leaving the small seaside settlement with a magnificent harbour, an hour and a half west of Hamilton.
That s because he works at the Rusty Snapper cafe where the favourite on the menu for kids is either Loaded Wedges with bacon, sour cream, sweet chilli and cheese, or Cheesey Wheezy, which is fries with cheesy mayonnaise on top.
For 24-year-old Dallas, Kāwhia is a place he s come and gone from many times in his life.
But he says it was returning this last time that he really opened his eyes. ....

From solar power farms to nurseries and tribal water storage facilities, the Waikato’s main iwi are taking a multi-faceted, proactive approach to surviving impending changes to the Earth’s climate.
Waikato-Tainui strategy and relationships manager Manaaki Nepia revealed numerous aspects of the iwi’s game plan to a meeting of Hamilton City Council’s environment committee.
“The health and wellbeing of our whenua is a reflection of the health and wellbeing of our people,” she told the committee via a Zoom conference call on Tuesday. ....

Boat trailer parking crackdown could hook locals on other breaches

Kawhia Boating and Angling Club secretary Linda Rowe said after the meeting there were 70 boats entered into the one-base competition.
Previously fishing contest entrants parked vehicles and trailers on the grounds of the Maketu Marae, near the Kāwhia boat ramp, Walsh said.
The arrangement was for the fishers to pass the hat around and give a sum to the marae committee.

Kawhia is a popular fishing spot, both at sea and inside the harbour.
But a new marae committee set a $60 price per vehicle, which wasn’t taken up.
Obtaining a park on the open ground immediately adjacent to the ramp means turning up before 6am, he said. ....

Manaaki Nepia grew up eeling in the murky waters flowing into the Waikato River, beneath the shadow of the Huntly coal power station.
She wouldn t take the freshwater tuna from there today; years more of industrial and agricultural run-off further upstream have further polluted the river.
As an iwi, they will often bring together a group to paddle waka from the small Waikato Iti stream coming off Tongariro, down into the river and 400km to the sea. Paddling all the way down, we see the variation in the colour and it s enormous, she says. By the time you get to Karapiro, the discolouration is alm ....
