Mayor Gary Christenson announced a series of outdoor Summer Festivals in Malden Center this summer.
Beginning June 12 and occurring every other Saturday through the end of August, the city will sponsor live music, cultural performances, artisan and craft displays, a car show, Cosplay contests, and many other surprises throughout the summer. A main stage will be erected in the Pleasant Street Parking Lot, while other events will occur at City Hall Plaza and other areas along Pleasant and Exchange Streets.
“To help our businesses rebound after a horrible year, we want to bring a series of open-air events that will give our residents an opportunity to come out and re-explore Malden,”  Christenson said. “We have a bunch of surprises, but we also hope to add to the full slate of events as the summer goes on and bring something for everyone to enjoy.”

How one city is stemming evictions, one person at a time

MALDEN — For 25 years, Irma found steady work as a nanny. Then, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit last March, the family she worked for no longer felt comfortable with her taking the T to their house.
Without a car, she lost her job. As an undocumented immigrant, she couldn’t receive unemployment. The bills mounted. Food. Utilities. And rent, so much rent. By late last year, Irma — who didn’t want her last name published because of her immigration status — owed $13,000 on the one-bedroom apartment she rents in Malden.

Housing Families Inc. Opening First-Ever Individual Shelter in Malden

MALDEN, Mass., Jan. 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Housing Families will open a new shelter for homeless individuals at the OYO Hotel in Malden in early February, the result of close collaboration between the City of Malden, Malden Redevelopment Authority, Malden's legislative delegation, and several nonprofit partners. Housing Families, a Malden-based housing services organization, has provided emergency shelter for families for nearly 35 years, but this will be their first shelter for adult individuals. The 22-bed shelter will house individuals from the Metro North region, with priority given to Malden residents.
Malden and its neighboring cities have long lacked an individual shelter, and the local need has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Because congregate shelters have been especially vulnerable to COVID-19, Housing Families' new shelter provides each individual with a private room and bathroom to ensure social distancing and reduce COVID-19 transmission.
