The Canadian film and television industry has been rocked following allegations that prominent filmmaker and “Inconvenient Indian” director Michelle Latimer is not Indigenous, as she has claimed to be for the past 20 years.
The hurt and anger from the Indigenous filmmaking community that followed on social media has been palpable, drawing further attention to the need for systemic change as awards bodies and the funding arms Latimer has benefited from begin conversations about where to go next.
In an investigative piece published on Dec. 17, CBC News revealed Kitigan Zibi members refute Latimer’s claims to be of “Algonquin, Métis and French heritage, from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (Maniwaki), Quebec.” The news outlet also examined census records showing that Latimer’s grandfather was not Indigenous or Métis as she previously claimed, but French-Canadian. The National Film Board is withdrawing the Michelle Latimer-directed documentary 
Inconvenient Indian from all film festivals and distribution after her Indigenous identity claims were called into question last week.
The film is an adaptation of author Thomas King s best-selling book
The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America. The film was to make its U.S. debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival early next year.  ....

Michelle Latimer, director of the CBC Television series Trickster, announced in a Facebook post Monday that she is resigning from the second season of the show after her Indigenous identity claims were called into question last week.
It s with a heavy heart that I am resigning from Season 2 of Trickster, Latimer wrote in the Facebook post.
When I first read the novels that inspired Trickster, I was struck by the powerful tale of a family coming together to overcome adversity. I envisioned this story as a television series that would celebrate Indigenous talent and amplify Indigenous voices. ....

Trickster announced their resignations on Friday, a day after the Indigenous identity claims of the show s co-creator and director Michelle Latimer were called into question.
Danis Goulet, a Cree/Métis filmmaker who worked as a consulting producer, stated on Twitter she resigned from the show last week. She wrote she initially joined the production because it would be led by Indigenous creators. 
However, now that there is uncertainty about this, I feel a responsibility to uphold the values that I am dedicated to, she wrote. ....
