Santa Barbara District Staff Urges Denial of Outdoor-Learning Charter School


In response to the questions about the demographics, the Thoreau proponents responded:
It is the intention of this petition to serve a similar proportional demographic as exists in the SBUSD. While it is clear that professional, middle-class and predominantly Caucasian families are eager to educate their children in more progressive, learner-centered learning environments, it is harder to attract families who have no experience with such environments.
To remedy this, we will have a lottery approach with weighted criteria.
The district also questioned how the curriculum would motivate students to learn outdoors.
Thoreau said the teachers would be instrumental in encouraging students to continually learn tasks. ....
