'A short on human ingenuity': Why CPPIB's new chief says fossil fuel divestment is off the table under his watch

Article content
The new chief executive of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board has no plans to institute a blanket divestment of oil and gas assets during his tenure, in part because he believes science will find solutions to many of the issues that have made environmentalists and some investors question such holdings.
“Simple divestment is essentially a short on human ingenuity,” John Graham told the Financial Post in a recent interview, adding that there are “incredibly bright, talented” scientists and engineers in the oil and gas industry.

Tricon CEO Gary Berman and Canada Pension Plan CEO John Graham (Tricon, CPP)
A joint venture led by Canada’s largest pension fund is launching a $400 million joint venture to develop multifamily rentals around Toronto.
Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is contributing 70 percent of the capital while its partner, Developer Tricon Residential, is covering the remaining 30 percent.
The JV plans to develop properties “close to major transit and employment nodes” and has a long-term hold strategy, according to news announcing the venture. Tricon will develop and manage the properties.
The first project is a two-tower development with 870 units in Toronto’s Downtown East area. The JV is putting about $150 million in equity capital toward the roughly $475 million project. The venture is under contract for the property, and plans to break ground early next year, with completion projected for 2025.

Coronavirus in the Middle East: Rumours of vaccine tourism in Dubai unfounded – for now

Rumours of vaccine tourism in Dubai unfounded – for now
Despite media reports to the contrary, travel agents say there's no such thing as vaccine tourism in Dubai right now. Currently only residents and nationals may access vaccinations there. But, they add, that could change. By Cathrin Schaer & Gasia Ohanes
Unless you happen to have a connection to a royal family in the United Arab Emirates, you're unlikely to be able to jump the queue for a COVID-19 vaccination while on vacation in Dubai anytime soon. "It's just media hype," one German travel agent replied when asked if it was possible to take a vaccination-inclusive holiday there. "There is no vaccine tourism in Dubai – at least, not yet."

Will tourism ever recover from the pandemic?
Connections and cash
Other headlines were made by well-connected bankers, executives and even members of the Spanish royal family who travelled to the UAE and allegedly used contacts with senior officials or the royal family to get access to vaccinations. This included the head of Canada's largest pension fund, Mark Machin, who resigned in February after being vaccinated in Dubai despite his own government's advice not to travel.
Dubai's tourism industry has suffered during the pandemic
Politicians from the Middle East have also caused public outcry after they had been vaccinated in Dubai. But usually they either accessed the medicines because they held a dual residency or high-ranking contacts.

Re This Has Not Been Canada’s Finest Hour (Editorial, March 3): I believe the reason that the COVID-19 death rate in Canada is lower than the world’s worst-hit countries is the quiet compliance of the vast majority of Canadians. With our daily sacrifices, and struggle to maintain our threadbare patience, we are picking up the slack left by the people who should be leading and protecting us.
