A-League elimination finals at a glance

* Central Coast: Oliver Bozanic and Matt Simon
The local duo have been crucial to the Mariners' rise up the table in 2021. Skipper Bozanic's drive from midfield sets the tone while Simon has enjoyed an incredible resurgence as the target man up top.
* Macarthur: Markel Susaeta and Adam Federici
Matt Derbyshire may be Macarthur's leading scorer but it's Susaeta's creativity and guile that's crucial to much of their attack. Goalkeeper Federici has been immense between the sticks this season and will be keen to perform on the big stage.
* KEY TO THE GAME
Can Macarthur make the most of their weight of possession? The Bulls will need to get the creative Susaeta involved and turn that into goals. Otherwise they'll be susceptible on the counter against the Mariners - who've had their number this season.

De Silva stunner sees Mariners complete comeback win over Bulls

Sixth-placed Macarthur went in front at Campbelltown Stadium when Markel Susaeta raced onto a chipped pass before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.
However, the Spaniard’s fourth goal of the campaign – coming from the first attempt on target by either team – only sparked the Mariners into life.
They were level before half-time thanks to Jack Clisby, who grabbed his first A-League goal since February 2020 when firing a left-footed shot in from a tight angle.
The defender was denied a second by a VAR check, replays showing him narrowly offside to rule out an effort similar to his equaliser.

The seven year wait for finals football for the Central Coast Mariners looks almost certain to end after a sublime Danny De Silva winner earned them a 2-1 victory over the Macarthur Bulls in Campbelltown.
The win, which continues their miraculous transformation this season, was inspired by a sensational performance from Costa Rican international Marco Urena and elevates Alen Stajcic’s side back up to third place on the table with just two games left in the regular season.
“It’s a big stride towards the finals but it’s not mathematically sealed yet at all,” Stajcic said.

Milicic: Derbyshire impacting Bulls' fortunes with more than goals alone

Macarthur FC head coach Ante Milicic says striker Matt Derbyshire's impact on his squad has gone far beyond his impressive goalscoring haul throughout his maiden A-League season.
The Englishman scored goals 11 and 12 of his impressive 2020/21 campaign to help Macarthur to a 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory on Friday night. The result sent his side momentarily into the top two, but more importantly strengthened the Bulls' grip on a Finals Series place.
After his star striker put on yet another match-winning display against Victory, Bulls boss Milicic said his impact stretches far further than end-product alone as the experienced spearhead helps to inspire success both on and off the field in Campbelltown.

Melbourne City's gap at the top of the table continues to grow as the league-leaders forged an eight-point advantage by the end of an eight-game Matchweek 20.

Macarthur FC came from  behind to beat Melbourne Victory 2-1 in the first game of the Matchweek before Adelaide United and Wellington Phoenix played out a 0-0 draw at Coopers Stadium.

His former side may be flying ahead of the pack toward its first ever piece of A-League silverware, but Denis Genreau has no regrets regarding his decision to depart Melbourne City for a new opportunity with Macarthur FC - with the eagerness for game time at the top of his priorities.
In a revealing chat with Robbie Cornthwaite and Daniel Garb on the ABC Grandstand Football Podcast, the 21-year-old central midfielder explained a lack of opportunities provided to him at City, combined with the promise of first-team football under Ante Milicic at the A-League newcomers were two key factors which affected his decision to depart the club in which he grew through the youth ranks for a new challenge.

The second leg of this UEFA Europa League semi-final is fascinatingly poised as Arsenal, seeking a second final appearance in three seasons, host Villarreal needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit, the Spanish side having ended the Gunners' competition record run of 12 away games without defeat with their eighth successive European victory in the first leg in Spain. Bulls reined in as Roar find their voice

Livewire striker Dylan Wenzel-Halls bagged his seventh goal of the season early in the match and midfielder Riku Danzaki extended the winning margin just before the hour mark.
It was a costly loss for Macarthur who could have moved just one point shy of top spot with victory.
The fledgling A-League side went into the contest seeking a club-high fourth successive win.
Brisbane, conversely, have been a side bereft of confidence and woefully out of form on an eight-game winless run dating back two months.
The Roar had produced just three goals in their last four matches, yet the evidence of the first half ran contrary to expectations.
