Sustainable electricity generation at low temperatures

Low-temperature heat in the form of waste heat from industry or geothermal power plants offers big potential for sustainable and need-tailored power supply. The Modular Low-temperature Cycle Karlsruhe (MoNiKa), the only research facility of this kind in Europe, has now started operation at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Work is aimed at enhancing efficiency and environmental compatibility of the conversion of excessive heat into electric power by means of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC).
In the past years, low-temperature heat gained importance for efficient electricity generation with low CO2 emissions. "Instead of releasing excessive heat into the environment, it makes more sense to use it and to produce electricity from it," says Dr. Dietmar Kuhn, Head of the Energy and Process Engineering Group of KIT's Institute for Thermal Energy Technology and Safety (ITES). So-called ORC facilities are used to convert heat with a temperature below 200°C into electricity for private households. These facilities are based on the organic Rankine cycle, a process named after the British founder of thermodynamics, William John Macquorn Rankine, and mainly used in geothermal power plants.

At the Hannover Messe 2021 from April 12 to 16, the innovation will be showcased at KIT's virtual booth "Future Hub."

Recycling and optimized resource cycles, second use, and knowledge-based cell design are expected to enhance sustainability and safety of lithium-ion batteries in future. The basis is now provided by process engineers and materials scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), who jointly study the battery lifecycle. The new research projects are carried out within the battery research clusters "greenBatt" and "BattNutzung" funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Battery cells of constant high performance can considerably reduce the ecological footprint of applications, such as electric mobility. In addition, second use of such cells is considered, e.g. in large networks of storage systems. But not all cells are suited for such "second-life scenarios." Long-term operation requires perfect interaction of a number of components and materials. "Permanent charging and discharging of the battery is inevitably associated with undesired side reactions," says Professor Hans-Jürgen Seifert from the Applied Materials Physics Department of KIT's Institute for Applied Materials. "When this has an adverse effect on the battery's behavior, it is referred to as degradation or aging. Degradation cannot be prevented completely, but it can be delayed and mitigated by an adequate cell design." Seifert and his team analyze degradation mechanisms in the highly reactive electrolyte by the associated gas formation. They carry out highly precise calorimetric measurements to balance heat quantities during battery operation and model them thermodynamically. The project is aimed at precisely predicting the cell behavior during use, Seifert explains: "With our models, safe and sustainable batteries can be developed in a knowledge-based manner and quick commercialization will be possible."

Use of waste heat contributes largely to sustainable energy supply. Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and T?hoku University in Japan have now come much closer to their goal of converting waste heat into electrical power at small temperature differences. As reported in
Joule, electrical power per footprint of thermomagnetic generators based on Heusler alloy films has been increased by a factor of 3.4. (DOI: 10.1016/j.joule.2020.10.019)
Many technical processes only use part of the energy consumed. The remaining fraction leaves the system in the form of waste heat. Frequently, this heat is released into the environment unused. However, it can also be used for heat supply or power generation. The higher the temperature of the waste heat is, the easier and cheaper is its reuse. Thermoelectric generators can use waste heat of low temperature for direct conversion into electrical power. Thermoelectric materials used so far, however, have been expensive and sometimes even toxic. Moreover, thermoelectric generators require large temperature differences for reaching efficiencies of just a few percent.
