Christchurch's Metro Sports Facility to be known as Parakiore

Ōtākaro Ltd
Roof trusses go up at Christchurch's long-awaited Metro Sports Facility.
A public council report described Parakiore as a man of great strength and amazing speed as a runner. He was known his prowess, agility and quick-thinking.
In a presentation from the Matapopore Charitable Trust, provided in the report, they explain a narrative linked to Parakiore which tells the story of “resiliency, determination and agility”.
Parakiore was once embroiled in a battle and chased along Moeraki beach, but was able to sprint away so quickly that his speed was said to be the same as a spark igniting dried flax, which was commonly used as a fire starter.

Ten years on, the earthquake still casts its shadow over Christchurch's past, present and future

When the deadly second earthquake struck Christchurch ten years ago today, among the many things toppled by natural forces were statues of the city's founding father John Robert Godley, colonial politician William Rolleston and imperial hero Robert Falcon Scott.

When the deadly second earthquake struck Christchurch 10 years ago today, among the many things toppled by natural forces were statues of the city's founding father John Robert Godley, colonial politician William Rolleston and imperial hero Robert Falcon Scott.
Far worse things happened, of course, but this break with the past came to feel powerfully symbolic.
My 2016 book Christchurch Ruptures was in large part about the risks of our thinking being trapped in the past and attempting to put things back as they were. Might letting these statues go allow the city to leave behind the colonial attitudes and practices they represented?

Special Kiwi connection to land would make Eden Project NZ - designer

They have released new images which they stress are concepts only.
Described as “a multi-sensory world-class visitor destination” combining education with entertainment, the project would be established in the Avonside loop between Retreat Rd and Avonside Dr where homes were cleared after the earthquakes.
At about 40 hectares, the site is almost twice the size of the city’s Botanic Gardens.
Surrounded on three sides by the river with its walking and cycle path, the project will have its display areas presented as nine realms: sky, wind, forest and birds, Mother Earth, quakes and volcanoes, cultivated foods, uncultivated foods, ocean, and fresh water.
