Barry Mason, the songwriter, who has died aged 85, channelled micro-dramas of love and loss in the lyrics to a string of pop hits in the 1960s and 1970s, notably The Last Waltz and Delilah.
With music by his early collaborator Les Reed, The Last Waltz was one of three songs completed on a wet Sunday in 1967 after their golf date was rained off.

He made a film on Joe Exotic a decade before Tiger King, lulls interviewees into personal revelations – and can rock a leather suit. So why is he so anxious?
Sat 10 Apr 2021 03.00 EDT
“There’s no getting away from the fact that, even aged 50, I’m a slightly awkward person, a fearful person, worry-prone,” says Louis Theroux, wriggling in his seat. The film-maker picks up and puts down a coffee without drinking. He wears all blue: navy sweater, stock denim, one of those indestructible plastic Casio watches on his wrist. “I worry about what people think,” Theroux continues, “I worry about giving offence, being judged, not coming up to scratch, being thin-skinned.”

In March 2020, in the early days of the first lockdown, word began to spread about a documentary so outrageous, so packed with astonishing twists and turns, that it almost defied belief. Just a month later, 64 million households around the world had gawped at Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, Madness, a seven-episode Netflix series that more than delivered on its title. It told the wild story of Joe Exotic, the gay, polyamorous proprietor of a big cat wildlife park, GW Zoo in Oklahoma, and his extraordinary rivalry with Carole Baskin, an animal rights activist and proprietor of her own big cat sanctuary, which ultimately led to his downfall and eventual imprisonment for animal abuse and hiring someone to kill Baskin.

Eurovision star Dana's brother sues Scotland Yard for £5m

The brother of Eurovision winner Dana is suing Scotland Yard and prosecutors for up to £5million in damages in a landmark case after he was cleared of historical sex offences.
John Brown, 67, has initiated proceedings at the High Court in London for alleged malicious prosecution and misfeasance in a public office.
The married father-of-three says he was dragged into police attempts to secure ‘celebrity’ prosecutions in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal owing to his famous sister.

Sydenham's Rolf Harris quizzed by police over new sex allegations
Sydenham entertainer Rolf Harris has been interviewed under caution in connection with the police inquiry set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal, it was reported last night (February 5).
Scotland Yard said an 84-year-old was questioned on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at a police station in Stafford, Staffordshire, by Operation Yewtree detectives in connection with allegations of sexual offences.
The force said he was interviewed under the strand of the investigation they have termed "others" and that their inquiries continue.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the man arrested has already been questioned under Operation Yewtree. However, he would not disclose the man's identity.

McDonald and Dodds; Max Clifford, The Fall of a Tabloid King; The Terror, reviews

Patsy Kensit and one of the Kemp brothers from Spandau Ballet climb into a hot air balloon … It sounds like the beginning of a joke, or the basis of a new cartoon strip in Viz (still going, I checked). It was in fact the plot of crime caper McDonald and Dodds (STV, Sunday).
Patsy and Martin played Mick and Barbara, part of a group of five who took to the skies only for the trip to end with one person dead. Not Patsy or Martin, obviously. You don’t cast Patsy and Martin only to kill them in the first ten minutes. Think of all the brilliant acting you would miss out on, especially from, ahem, Patsy.

Max Clifford: The Fall of a Tabloid King

“The programme skirted perilously close to, if not hagiography, then at least glamorisation of how far and how fast you can go as a man without conscience. It was saved by interviews with the women who eventually testified against Clifford at trial. The Fall of a Tabloid King remained, overall, an essentially superficial look at a profound problem. It hinted occasionally at the greater depths, but didn’t plumb them.”
The Story of Welsh Art, BBC4
“There was an absolute treasure trove here, from the gorgeous Celtic crosses to the Abergavenny Jesse, carved from the trunk of an oak tree. Happily this documentary wasn’t shouty either, with mostly unobtrusive background music and not too much talking. This is my favourite type of art programme – simple and gimmick-free.”

Just when you thought there was no aspect of the animal kingdom left for Sir David Attenborough to cover, the veteran broadcaster pulls a rabbit out of the hat. Or in this case, a hummingbird, Bengal tiger, fiddler crab and a whole host of other eye-catching creatures. Attenborough has always been fascinated by colour in the natural world – and this new two-part series sees him travel from the rainforests of Costa Rica to the snowclad Scottish Highlands to indulge in his passion. In tonight’s opening part we find out how, millions of years ago, the first animals had eyes that were unable to distinguish colour. Gradually, however, this changed and “seeing in colour” gave creatures many advantages, whether to find food, attract a mate or warn off an enemy. Get ready for amazing footage of peacocks, mandrill baboons, birds-of-paradise, Andean flamingos and strawberry poison dart frogs.

TV Previews: Critic Paul Whitelaw rounds up the pick of this week's TV

Courier TV critic Paul Whitelaw takes no prisoners this week as he gives his verdict on programmes including The Fall of a Tabloid King, Why is Covid Killing People of Colour and The Terror.
Max Clifford: The Fall of a Tabloid King – Channel 4, Monday, 9pm
This excoriating documentary delves into the sordid cesspit of Clifford’s life. The now dead publicist was a vile human being: an amoral hypocrite, bully and narcissist. A psychopath. A pervert. A paedophile. Much like Savile, he hid in plain sight. Clifford revelled in power and the fear he wrought. A self-styled arch-manipulator, he thought he was untouchable. So no wonder we all enjoyed some schadenfreude when he was eventually exposed and incarcerated. But, via contributions from some of his victims, the programme paints a far more important picture of an evil man who was kept afloat for years by some of our media. It’s the antithesis of Clifford’s philosophy. It prints the truth.

Inspired by 24 hours of clips of Christopher Plummer not actually singing “Edelweiss”, marking the actor’s death earlier this month, Stewart Wood suggested this list and nominated no 1. I excluded things people are remembered for saying that they didn’t actually say, as we have already done Misquotations and Misattributed Quotations.

Eating a hamster: Freddie Starr.
The Sun’s front page headline from 1986 dogged the late comedian for the rest of his life. He never ate or attempted to eat a friend’s hamster. The story was planted by Starr’s publicist, the late Max Clifford, to drum up publicity for a tour. To add insult to injury, Starr was a vegetarian. Thanks to David Lister.
