'Suspicion' over Farleigh truck stop prompts council action

The action comes after the council received a petition with the signatures of about 70 residents stating their opposition to a truck depot being built at 4 Christoe St at Farleigh.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said the council had not received a development application for the truck stop.
"There's just land filling going on (at the site) at the moment, which we have stopped until we get a proper DA," Cr Williamson said.
"There is a lot of suspicion that the site may have intent to be used for something else.
"We have nothing to go on yet because there's no DA."

Venue approved despite councillor's 'sewage overflow' claim

Mackay Regional Council has approved the development of a new function centre at Midge Point, dismissing one councillor’s claim that it could potentially lead to a “sewage overflow”.
Developers will need to meet more than 30 conditions if they go ahead with their plans – submitted to the council in April last year – for a wedding and corporate events centre on Lawson St.
Councillors Laurence Bonaventura, Alison Jones, Martin Bella and Russell Seymour voted against approving the venue, but this fell short of the majority required to flush the proposal.
Cr Bonaventura said he believed the development should not go ahead because it was proposed for rural residential zoned area and because of his own concerns about sewage overflow.

Mackay Mayor: Why we are so lucky this Australia Day

Fresh air is still available to us.
We have one of the world’s best health services.
Gender is not a barrier.
High quality education as a right.
Our borders are under control.
We trust our legal system.
We expect democracy as a natural right.
We trust our electoral processes.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson during the Australia Day awards dinner on Monday night shone a light on how lucky were are in Australia.
Reminding us Australia Day is about celebrating the relative freedoms we enjoy as COVID continues to ravage many countries abroad.
“Aussies have a reputation of being laid back and friendly but this is still a country where hard work, passion and drive will reward you,” he said.

'No alarm in this': Mayor's message to community

Janessa Ekert
Journalist
I didn’t always want to be a journalist. In fact, when I was younger my dream was to be an archaeologist – who wouldn’t want to be like Indiana Jones? However, now that I am a journalist, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life.
I love listening to people’s stories and sharing them with others.
I’m a Queenslander through and though. Mackay is the furthest south I have ever lived. I’m an only child and I was raised in Airlie Beach.
My parents are former boaties; we lived on a 42 foot...

'Flooded, forget it': Ute caught in Finch Hatton floodwaters

A shocking image of an overturned ute in floodwaters at Finch Hatton has prompted community members to drive home the ever-present wet weather message: If it’s flooded, forget it.
Warren ‘Wazza’ Swadling of Platypus Bush Camp at Finch Hatton shared the image of the car on Facebook on Saturday.
It shows a ute turned over on its side, caught in floodwaters at a Finch Hatton crossing.
The rain gauge nearby shows waters approaching one metre in height.

Mr Swadling said he was “safe and dry” at home but warned people to be cautious on the roads.

Loo paper, karens, rona: How COVID-19 controlled our lives

Coronavirus was the overseas disease. Until it wasn't.
We knew it was on cruise ships and we had locals from Mackay and Whitsundays on board in late February.
But back then I was still planning on jetsetting to Italy and Spain for my friend's 50th.
"It'll be fine. The virus is just in the north of Italy," we assured ourselves.
"We're young and this virus is hitting the oldies," we told our families.
On March 10, our trip was cancelled when Italy closed its borders to try to shut down the spread of COVID-19 as hospitals were overrun with patients and deaths escalated.

NOVEMBER REVIEW: Stories of strength, charity and tenacity

Hummingbird House received more than $6500 from Coles shoppers and team members in Mackay.
Stores at Northern Beaches, Parkside Plaza and Caneland Central were praised for their efforts and donations, despite the financial challenges from COVID-19.
Parkside Plaza Coles store manager Josh Back said the appeal was an opportunity for his team to raise money for Queensland's only children's hospice.

June in review: Flashback to Mercury's history in print

The final
Daily Mercury print newspaper landed on people's doorsteps and its pages turned for the last time.
How do you send off a publication that has been around for 154 years with less than a month's notice?
Well, we did our best. We had one to two pages in every paper of the Daily Mercury for the final fortnight as well as an eight-page wraparound for the final issue on Saturday June 27, 2020.
It was a team effort but special thanks goes to Loris Wall, Lucy Martin, Tony Martin, Heidi Petith and Kate Rasmussen for pitching in to ensure we gave a nod to the paper's history during that final month.

A MACKAY couple holed up on the coronavirus-infected cruise ship Diamond Princess hope to today fly to Darwin where they will face another fortnight of quarantine - but on home soil.
Retired Andergrove couple Peter and Linda Giles have spent the past 15 days entertaining themselves as best they can aboard the ship docked at Yokohama in Japan - the last port of call, and the longest for the pair.
"Next time we might go bush," Mr Giles said from the balcony cabin aboard the cruise ship.

MAY FLASHBACK: Travel bubble fight as Mackay is virus free

Almost half the drivers who died on Mackay roads in five years were under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
That is the stark reality revealed in the University of the Sunshine Coast's Road Safety Research Collaboration study into fatal crashes in Queensland from 2011 to 2015.
Professor Jeremy Davey said data suggested drink-driving and drug-driving fatalities were higher for rural and regional areas like Mackay.
Last week on Mackay region roads, police stopped 17 alleged drug-drivers and 14 alleged drink-drivers, Acting Senior Sergeant Daniel Goldburg of Mackay Road Policing Unit said.
The figure is almost double the average of 9-10 drug-drivers charged per week in the Mackay district last year.
