CME commencement: Technical difficulties, empty liquor bottles, and smiles

As Pomp and Circumstance began playing, students stomped through the grass to University Stadium, leaving behind a trail of small single-shot liquor bottles. Most of them were Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey.  In sunny, 92 degree weather bachelor’s candidates smiled talking to their friends. “We made it,” was the most common statement.  Empty liquor bottle where students...

University Police trained to subdue active shooters

In the wake of national gun violence, people have become more weary and paranoid about shootings. California is known for its strict gun laws, however counties with less than 200,000 population allow residents to open carry guns.
The last time Butte county had less than 200,000 residents was more than two decades ago. The county currently has about 226,000 residents and Chico has more than 103,000 residents. The county will eventually update its gun laws to adhere to state regulations, as it becomes more populated.
No one has ever been arrested for shooting a gun on Chico State campus, according to all of the searchable University Police Department records and case reports, which go as far back as 1993. However, the last time someone was arrested for possessing a firearm near campus was March 23, according to Chico State Daily Crime Log.

Seeing Haiti through native eyes

Haiti is not a poor country, it’s rich in culture and wondrous natural landscapes. Associated Students Adventure Outings gave students a free virtual tour of Haiti on May 4. It was facilitated by Jean Chrislot Michaud, a Haitain-born Wildcat. He was born in Port-Uu Price, the capital of Haiti.
Michaud was delighted to share some history, traditions and popular cuisines from his homeland.
Haiti is a part of the West Indies Islands, which is surrounded by the Carribean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, which has a collective 19 million inhabitants. It’s sandwiched between Cuba and Puerto Rico and neighbors Jamaica along with thousands of other small islands.

Earth Day is every day in Chico

Collective action and protecting the environment is what Earth Day is all about. The holiday started on April 22, 1970 and Chico State has been celebrating it since the start. The first celebration was seen as a protest but it has grown to be a joyous occasion.
“Restore our Earth” is the theme for Earth Day this year. It focuses on climate change, individual action and climate change literacy.
Chico State celebrates all Earth Day festivities: Earth Day, Earth Week and Earth Month. The university is all for sustainability and inclusiveness. Chico State has a few programs and clubs for Wildcats to get involved in sustainability efforts.

University Housing implements new COVID-19 rules

New policies have been adopted by University Housing for the fall semester to reduce students’ exposure to COVID-19.
Wildcats applying for University Housing must be fully vaccinated by July 30 in order to move-in on their assigned date. Two doses of either Pfizer of Moderna, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is required. The university has some isolation and quarantine rooms to accommodate individuals who are half vaccinated.
“Residents are required to have a COVID test within 72 hours of arrival in University Housing at the beginning of each semester and provide verification of test and test results,” said Fall 2021 and 2022 Policy Guide. “Residents are required to complete regularly scheduled COVID testing. Residents are required to notify the Chico COVID Hotline 530-898-2222 immediately of a positive test.”

University Farm grows past hardships at their annual sale

Chico State’s University Farm Greenhouses pruned past obstacles and had record sales at their annual spring sale this year.
The sale was four weekends long. It made $8000 the first week and about $13,000 in total. The proceeds from the annual plant sale helps fund the College of Agriculture’s hands-on opportunities for students. It’s allocated toward student research projects, student employees’ pay and educational programs.
A majority of the plants sold were grown at the University Farm Greenhouse in collaboration with the Chico State Organic Vegetable Project, the Crop Science and Horticulture Club and a few agriculture classes from the College of Agriculture.

A father's dream fulfilled, a family's legacy almost complete – The Orion

All 10 children from one Oroville family will soon share the same achievement: Chico State graduate
Xue and Ong Moua Yang brought 10 children into this world: seven sons and three daughters. On May 20, 2021, all 10 children will have graduated from Chico State. The family’s incredible story is a testament to hard work, family resilience and kept promises.
In 1984, the Yangs immigrated from Laos to the U.S. in search of a better life. The family touched down in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 and lived there until a paternal uncle, who attended Chico State, recommended the family move to Butte County.
The Yang family has lived in Oroville since 1989. Papa Yang learned some basic English, but Mama Yang only spoke Hmong, the language of their ancestors.

Custodial Service rejoice for students returning to campus

Chico State’s custodial service is confidently looking forward to a safe return to campus. They have been steadily cleaning an empty campus throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and are excited for the warm laughter and smiles students bring.
Mike Guzzi, associate vice president of facilities and capital projects is confident about the return to full capacity.
“From a facilities and support perspective, absolutely yes,” said Guzzi when asked if it was safe to return to campus. “The majority of our team members, in general, seem very excited about the return of students and employees to campus.”
Working on an empty campus was harrowing for custodian Dale Vang, a 2009 international relations graduate since he would usually interact with students and faculty members.
