The Besnard Lakes – Are The Last Of The Great Thunderstorm Warnings

A sprawling, symphonic rock ensemble from a country that has come to be known for them,
The Besnard Lakes have been a constant at the coalface of Canadian independent music for some 15 years now. In this time, the group – which revolves around the creative and romantic partnership of husband and wife
Jace Lasek and
Olga Goreas – have created a respectable body of work, five albums of dense, textured progressive music, two of which have been nominated for Canada’s Mercury equivalent, the Polaris Prize.
Fifteen years, of course, is a long time to have been in a rock group, a period long enough to weed out all but the most committed. By that point, the early hype has reduced to all but embers, elder statesman status is at least a decade off – truly, these are the marathon years. Had ....

Hi, how are you? DiS meets Daniel Johnston / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

July 23rd, 2007
To the likes of Beck, Conor Oberst, Bowie, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and a whole raft of other notables,
Daniel Johnston and his simple but profound songs are genius. To others, such as a random DiS comments board contributor,
he s just a fat nutter that draws like a 12 year old and makes poor music .
A manic depressive whose life has been seriously affected by his condition, Johnston began song writing as a child but didn t record until into adulthood. Interest in his endearingly naive music goes back to the early 80s when he was freely distributing his home made cassette tapes around Austin TX. Local musicians started to take notice, name-checking him in conversations and interviews until eventually Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a T-shirt bearing Johnston s ....

Indie Basement: Best Albums of the Year 2000

For people of a certain age, the year 2000 will always sound like the future. The time of jet packs, a potential catastrophic reset when all the world s computers might crash or, as Prince put it, party over. It had an interesting effect on art too, and a lot of the music released that year felt like it was made with the future in mind. Indie bands had discovered jungle, drum n bass, big beat and other forms of club music, and were incorporating it into their style. Other groups wildly ambitious, while others looked back and forward at the same time. Some of 2000 s music has aged better than others, and some of the albums in my list were not even contenders at the time (though most were). Far from a definitive list (and probably missing some of ....
