Chula Vista’s Millenia development is pivoting from retail to office space. Because of poor market conditions that saw a number of brick-and-mortar stores close in Chula Vista last year, Meridian Development plans to change what was originally anticipated to be retail space to office space. “What we are seeing in the shift of this plan, and because market conditions change, is really a shift from service industry jobs to professional jobs,” said Director of Development Eric Crockett. “Instead of having a focus on hotels and retail, this is now starting to shift to what we’ve all wanted to see, which is a major employment center, a professional office, and professional jobs in the South Bay,” he said.

Chula Vista — The developers of eastern Chula Vista’s Millenia project want to reduce the amount of non-residential space in the development, which is supposed to be a major revenue-generator for the city. Scaling back the development’s commercial and hotel space is expected to reduce Millenia’s annual tax revenues by $4.5 million, according to a staff report from Chula Vista. The City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the proposed changes to Millenia’s development plan. The current acre development plan includes a maximum of 3.4 million square feet of commercial space and 500 hotel rooms. Building that would generate $2.8 million in annual tax revenues by 2028 and $10 million by 2048.
