Even as pandemic restrictions start to loosen, Ontario hospitals are grappling to deal with long wait lists for surgeries put on hold to free up space for COVID-19 patients. There's also growing frustration among people waiting for procedures, including one who says she wakes up in pain every day and another who feels like she's in "purgatory."

Bay Area doctors finding ways to help some COVID-19 patients to better outcomes, keep them off ventilators

And there are many other tools, lessons learned, for those treating the most seriously ill coronavirus patients.
"Now we have a lot more information, number one, about the virus and how it acts," said Dr. Andra Blomkalns, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford, "and then also some additional treatment potentials, most notably the monoclonal antibodies from Lilly and Regeneron and those are given early in the course of the disease, before the patient needs to be hospitalized."
"Despite the challenges of treating so many COVID patients here over the past 10 months, doctors are confident the tools and knowledge gained during that time will be lifesaving long after the pandemic is over."

COVID-19 California: Bay Area hospitals rescheduling some elective surgeries, 'anything that can wait' amid surge in cases

Kaiser is postponing all elective and non-urgent surgeries at Northern California facilities due to the surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations. They plan to reschedule services as soon as feasible while making sure patients and staff stay safe.
As of now, University of California San Francisco Medical Center is not cancelling elective procedures, but the situation could change.
Stanford Health is also going ahead with elective procedures that do no require a hospital bed, while Kaiser Permanente is delaying many as a response to California's COVID-19 surge.
"We're still doing surgeries, for instance, with cancer, with urgent procedures. We're doing emergent procedures that need to be done," said Dr. Michael Vollmer with Kaiser Permanente, "But things that can be delayed, even for a week or two, until we can get this surge under control in the state."

COVID vaccine: Emotional day for John Muir's frontline workers who received first doses of coronavirus vaccine

Here's what side effects you can expect from different COVID-19 vaccines, what the response means, and how you can treat your symptoms at home.
"There's really no chance you're going to get any serious side effects, whereas with COVID you can end up in ICU or some serious stuff in your lungs you know," said Singh.
So far, John Muir has received nearly 5,000 doses from Pfizer and over the next three weeks, there are plans to give the first of two shots to that many of its frontline staff.
"When the vaccine arrived yesterday, it all became so real. From the very first day of this pandemic, protecting our teams was the most frightening part of it," explained John Muir's Chief Nurse Executive Michelle Lopes.
