Designed to suit Liberals Re: Opposing Bill C-10 is a non-partisan matter, editorial, May 1. This legislation is obviously designed to suit the Liberals and to help keep them in power as it provides them with the ability to censor “websites that say hurtful things about politicians and public servants.” I suspect mentioning Liberal incompetence would probably fall into the “hurtful” category. The only question now will be whether the NDP have the intestinal fortitude to jump out of bed with the Liberals. Judging by their recent behaviour, the answer is probably no. Mike Shurtliff Choices made Some people believe our current government has been successful enough to be considered for re-election. In my opinion, not only have they been inefficient but also unethical. Sure, they are throwing billions of our tax money at us in relief funds due to COVID lockdowns, but what other choice would any other government have? Do they really have our own interest at heart? Or are they putting multiple generations in debt so that they may be re-elected? Add irresponsible to the list.
Article content Using tech The pandemic has vividly demonstrated the importance of technology for addressing the outbreak. Countries that have effectively utilized technology for contract tracing, predicting hotspots and protecting vulnerable populations, had substantially lower COVID19 cases. Hence, reflecting on the current pandemic situation we find ourselves in — including the numerous nationwide shutdowns, the economic hardships and, most importantly, the thousands of lives lost — it is fair to question our response to the pandemic. Without question, moving forward we will need to strengthen our health-care system. There is little doubt that technology, particularly artificial intelligence, will play a significant role in the trajectory and potential of augmenting our health care. We have much more work to do. It is time for Canada to not only continue building its health- care and technology industries in isolation but rather integrate them in a manner that enhances medical productivity and efficacy while respecting our privacy. For us to solve this pandemic, and those potentially to come, we need to work not just hard, but rather smart. Merging A.I. with our health-care system is just the beginning of doing so, and this should be a top priority.
