The fire was first discovered, alongside a smaller fire at Buck Ridge, on April 18, 18kms northwest of Merritt along Hwy 8. Due to hot, windy conditions, the fire grew quickly from an estimated four hectares to 100 hectares, and remained out of control for several days. There has been a spate of early fire activity in the Merritt area, filling the skies in the Nicola Valley with smoke over the month of April. According to the BC Wildfire Service there are currently four active fires in the area, at Spahomin Creek, Coldwater River, Buck Ridge, and of the most concern is the blaze at Petit Creek, 18kms northwest of Merritt. “It is still out of control… it’s currently 100 hectares in size,” said Gagan Lidhran, information officer with BC Wildfire Service. “The fire is under investigation, but it’s suspected to be human caused. The BC Wildfire Service says a wildfire in the southern Interior is still burning out of control. The service says 42 firefighters were at the scene Tuesday, 18 kilometres northwest of Merritt. Two helicopters and two pieces of heavy equipment are also being used to bring the one-square-kilometre fire under control. An evacuation alert issued Sunday by the Thompson Nicola Regional District remains in place, affecting 54 properties in Canford and the Miller Estates Subdivision.
