The Petit Creek wildfire burning northwest of Merritt is now under control.
The B.C. Wildfire Service reported today, April 23, the 100-hectare grassfire is under control and the cause is unknown. The fire was discovered this past Sunday.
The wildfire service said strong winds reaching up to 60 km/hr are expected to sweep the Kamloops Fire Centre, today, April 23, and is urging members of the public and industry personnel to exercise extreme caution when conducting any outdoor burning and consider postponing burning if feasible.
Wind can cause grass fires to spread very quickly, the wildfire service said yesterday.
Anyone wishing to light a Category 3 open fire must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717. A burn registration number is not required to light a Category 2 open fire. ....

It’s not only the Interior of British Columbia experiencing a dry and busy start to this year’s wildfire season.
Wildfires have also been breaking out south of the 49th parallel, including the Snowshoe wildfire that burned eight hectares just across the B.C.-Washington border east of Oroville yesterday. The wildfire agency responded to 91 fires in a single week.
The fire broke out around 2 p.m. yesterday, April 19, and Washington State Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Janet Pearce says fire crews are mopping up today.

Petit Creek wildfire still burning out of control

There has been a spate of early fire activity in the Merritt area, filling the skies in the Nicola Valley with smoke over the month of April.
According to the BC Wildfire Service there are currently four active fires in the area, at Spahomin Creek, Coldwater River, Buck Ridge, and of the most concern is the blaze at Petit Creek, 18kms northwest of Merritt.
“It is still out of control… it’s currently 100 hectares in size,” said Gagan Lidhran, information officer with BC Wildfire Service.
“The fire is under investigation, but it’s suspected to be human caused. Most fires at this point in time are suspected human caused, but they will be under investigation to rule out how the activity occurred.” ....
